Suggestions / Re: Using Fishing Skill to Find Good Fishing Spots
« on: March 31, 2021, 09:50:46 PM »
I'm from Louisiana, the 'Sportsman's Paradise'. Fishing doesn't work that way in slow-moving waters, nor in open sea. It certainly would not work that way for ice fishing. People have favorite fishing spots because they've caught fish there, not because their senses tell them it's a good place.

Gameplay questions / Re: How do I hit someone
« on: March 29, 2021, 06:11:39 PM »
Aye. I've had guys who were armored up, head to toe, who were one-shotted with an arrow through their eye. Another was diced by a Njerp using nothing but his knife. That's not counting the ones who were just battered down by well-prepared Njerps.

So, Hire Companions, buy dogs. Don't treat the game like it is the World ofWarcraft.

General Discussion / Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?
« on: March 29, 2021, 05:43:15 PM »
One of my characters is nearly 19 and just found his first Masterwork Broadknife- in fact, he found TWO of them. Traveling from Kuikka lands down to Reemi lands, the only area he'd never been to, was very rewarding. His previous excursions were so exhausting that he'd just never gotten so far to the southeast.

Carrying a dozen furs, a handful of weapons, and 50 arrows for barter (and as it turned out, his Fine Northern knife and a linen shirt), he managed to trade for, at Masterwork quality, a broadaxe, a carving ax, the two broad knives, a small knife, and a shield. He also traded for a big boar (it just seemed like a must-buy!), a big dog, and a BIG BULL! In addition to the foot wrappings, for the coming cold, he bartered for enough dried and smoked fish and meat along the way to complete his trek. He'd found 37 Reemi villages and there was still a bit of their lands left to explore!

In the end, he returned home a week before winter with only 3 furs and none of the trade weapons left. His barn is looking pretty crowded with 5 dogs, 2 cattle, a deer, and a boar. All in all, the most successful trade trek I can recall.

Bug reports / Re: Infinite bear cuts.
« on: March 27, 2021, 03:29:13 AM »
This sounds similar to something I reported a while back...

https://www.unrealworld.fi/forums/index.php?topic=4806.0

"I've been trading my excess meat at villages. My usual routine is to load 300 cuts on my small cow. Many times now I've carried 300 over to the cow, dropped it and pushed the 300 cuts onto the cow. Once done, it has divided the 300 into two stacks on the cow, roughly 245 and 55. No problem, so far.

However, I've found, several times, that when the cow is holding almost her max number of different items my cow receives the larger stack but not the smaller stack, and that the original stack of 300 is still whole."

Sami did not respond to it then, so, I guess that exploit is still around.

Gameplay questions / Re: Cellar mechanics
« on: March 26, 2021, 06:38:45 AM »
To stop bears from opening your door: set traps outside, on the 3 tiles accessible from the door. And you can leave the diagonals set, then kick&reset to cardinal one before going to sleep. Light levers are simpler to reset than loop snares or paw boards.

Lot of hassle, somewhat immersion breaking. Not a fan of the style. But it works.

I understand what you mean about abusing the game mechanics. I don't feel that putting a loop snare on a cellar does so. It might be considered that the man-smell of the snare deters predators while birds and hares just don't share that instinct. I agree with you on the 3-trap being a bit of an abuse.

What is a good prevention measure to keep bears from opening your door?

I've trapped quite a few bears near my cabins but not once has a bear ever crossed or broken through a fence, so, build a fence as soon as possible. It's not that they CAN'T get through a fence. They just seem to have a hard time deciding to do so.

Considering the possibility that a bear can open doors, perhaps the fence should not have gates? For myself, I've got baited heavy deadfalls near any gates.

For my cellars, I just put a loop snare on top of them. I've caught lots of birds and hares with those. I've rarely seen tracks of any other animals around my cellars and never repetitively.

Bug reports / Re: Feather not acceptable
« on: March 25, 2021, 11:40:45 PM »
Sorry, I don't know how to post a screenshot here.

It shows that my inventory holds 3 Willow grouse feathers in two stacks BUT it only counts two feathers when I attempt to make an arrow, AND it doesn't even show that it's in the inventory when I try to make the arrow and it directs to my inventory to select the third feather.

Again, sorry, but I told you that I'm 20th Century (born 1949)...lol.

Additionally, this is the ONLY character I have who has completed the Bird Thief Quest, so, it could well be left over from the quest.

Gameplay questions / Re: Best equipment for hide working
« on: March 24, 2021, 08:07:16 PM »
I've never considered the level of rest as a possible factor (not to be confused with fatigue, which definitely is a factor). I'm not sure I will either, because time is working against that, i.e. if you sleep you risk delaying the processing to the next day at which time the skin may have degraded in quality just through time. However, it's worth keeping an eye out for a connection between rest and result.

I won't work a Superior skin until I'm at 'Vigorous' status. Then, I do a hide working step, then work a while on other things until I'm a bit worn and down to a lower level. Then I sleep, it's really just a short nap, and come back at Vigorous for the next step. It disrupts the usual night-time sleeping cycle but, with few Superior skins, it's doesn't happen that often. When I'm pressed by events to work on multiple skins, I eat a Bear Pipe root to stay at a high energy level. Mother Pipe will work, too, but I don't find many of those.

Suggestions / Honing blades
« on: March 24, 2021, 01:30:03 AM »
I'm certain it's been suggested before but I think that one should have to regularly hone axes, shovels, swords, and knives to maintain their quality. It might even be a skill requiring practice to achieve the best results. Besides, it would give me something to do during rainy or wintry days. It would be a skill that uses time but not a lot of energy, thus not very fatiguing. And it's more manly than making birchbark baskets...lol.

There are 3 things I believe affect the quality of the work. The skill level in Hideworking is key, the quality of the knife is important, and fatigue, either from weight carried or exertion.

For best results, get Hideworking skill up. My grandmasters routinely work skins while traveling, using just a tree and a rock, and maintain Fine quality furs. This, even when I don't strip down to reduce the burden malus. The fastest way to improve the skill is by trapping the plentiful birds in the Unreal World.

Knife quality helps to make up for lower Hideworking skill but, by itself, it's not the decisive factor, just the leading factor. And, if the hide is of fine quality, or better, don't work it until fully rested. 'Lively' is NOT good enough. Get to 'Vigorous' before you start and improve the odds.

I doubt that table vs tree trunk is a factor because the game doesn't quantify the table's value. It doesn't care if you used Perfect boards or inferior boards. It's still just a table.

I think the beater quality may make a difference but there's no way I can prove that. I always keep making clubs until I get a Fine club. Then I trade for the first GrandMasterwork Mace I see and use that as the beater.

I've seen Grandmasterwork furs as treasure. I've never made one, nor skinned one at that level. It may be impossible for the player to achieve such results, despite arranging all the factors to maximum advantage. It's indicative in that Superior skins often don't get finished successfully, despite maximized conditions and factors.

Bug reports / Feather not acceptable
« on: March 24, 2021, 12:42:30 AM »
I have a willow grouse feather that, for some reason, the game won't use to make an arrow. Not game-breaking, of course, but an oddity. It doesn't bundle with the other feathers, either. ( I think I saw a movie like this, with a reindeer and a red nose...)

Gameplay questions / Re: 3.63 New fire mechanics
« on: March 22, 2021, 08:44:09 PM »
15 firewoods a day for how long?
This prevents from traveling and exploring the world.

I personaly find this masochistic. It is fun when there is new content in the game but not when common tasks require repeating same actions.
Im very casual player so may be missing some joy from game  ;D.
I've found myself using salt more often. If my current plans are to stay near home and do various tasks for 2 weeks then I smoke. If it's October-April, then I dry. If it's summer and I want to do stuff, I use salt.

Before I basically never used salt because it was expensive and smoked stuff lasts longer. Now it's sometimes a worthwhile tradeoff

Exactly! I never used to use salt, after I learned that smoking kept the meat viable, longer. Now, I've collected dozens of sacks of salt in my camps so I'm not tied down for two weeks tending a fire.

General Discussion / Re: How often do villages renew their inventory?
« on: March 22, 2021, 08:40:08 PM »
From my experience, tools, weapons, equipment, and the like have taken over a year to be replaced. Otoh, after the new smokehouse rules, I went through a LOT of salt and had depleted the 8 villages nearest to me. Surprisingly, only weeks later everybody had sacks of salt again.

It's not Gospel, but that's been my experience in the game.
