General Discussion / 3.52 NOT a patch?
« on: November 15, 2018, 03:25:16 AM »
I see that 3.52 is now available. Will this wipe out my present game? In the 3rd year, I'd hate to have to give it up!

General Discussion / 6 for 6 Bear trapping
« on: November 12, 2018, 05:01:54 PM »
I've found extraordinary luck when I've stumbled across bears while traveling. My method is to retreat to the point that I can go to the strategic map, then to go back to the tactical map, build a large deadfall and bait it. Six times I've done this, and with different characters, and EVERY time I came back the next day to find the bear trapped.

I think it works so well because the trap is well within the bear's range. I carry uncooked meat/fish and always have at least one cord on hand so I can build a trap when opportunity knocks.

I'm finding that many activities render my characters tired early in the day and then I have nothing to do except waste time letting the clock run until evening so I don't find myself waking at midnite in 'Vigorous' status.

Couldn't we have activities like bone or wood carving that do NOT exhaust the character to while away the early to late evening hours? Maybe they could be used as offerings to the Gods, in trading, or as wards in conjunction with spells? For instance, the Inuit Totems ( I know, wrong continent) would take a lot of work and would be created over many sessions.

Suggestions / Spells for knives
« on: November 08, 2018, 12:58:32 PM »
I've been approached 3 times in the game to trade one of my knives for a spell. My problem is that, first, they asked for my Fine Hunting knife (the best I had at the time) and now they are asking me for Masterwork knives, virtually one-of-a-kind items!! (at least in my limited experience)

Couldn't they ask me to bring them some Fine Pawboard traps, or to fabricate some leather armor, or something, instead? I'm not going to trade an extremely rare item for a spell of limited value that I'd rarely use anyway.

Gameplay questions / Can my animals drown? and weapon handling
« on: November 08, 2018, 12:49:59 PM »
I want to explore the Islanders territory once the weather breaks, however, I've lost several Companions who have drowned while I rafted. My worry is that my dogs and bull might drown when I start punting the open sea areas. So, to quote the movie 'Marathon Man', "Is it safe?"

About wielding weapons, I understand about 2-hand weapons being hampered if you have another weapon in the off hand. What I'd like to clarify is whether having the main weapon in the off hand reduces skill at all. For instance, if I have a sword in main hand and shield in offhand, then wish to instead wield a mace, I'd use Shift X command and then wield the mace, replacing the sword, right? Which would put the shield in the main hand and mace in the off hand. Or must I now use Shift X command again to achieve the best skill with my weapon?

General Discussion / Njerp adds
« on: November 07, 2018, 01:50:46 PM »
I had an interesting encounter. There were two Njerp in adjacent areas. I wondered if, by attacking one, the other would come to assist the attacked Njerp. The answer is yes! I had just finished off the first when the second arrived, fatigued. I guess he had run all the way. It cost me a dog but the information was worth it...heh

Not bugs / Fur not recognized as fur
« on: November 06, 2018, 03:36:21 AM »
I have two damaged fur caps. When I try to repair one with the other I'm told that I can't use that kind of material, that I need a furred skin. It will allow me to use a tattered fur cloak, but not the other fur cap. It won't allow me to use de-furred leather. I tried that on the off-chance.

General Discussion / Companions won't fell trees, why?
« on: November 04, 2018, 03:28:19 PM »
I have games on both the free versions and Steam version in which Companions, when told to fell trees, state that they will WHEN they have the proper equipment and when there are proper trees to fell.

I've given a woodsman's ax to the first one. He already had a handaxe. Still the same response. In the other game, the Companion has his own woodsman's ax. There are plenty of larger trees in both games yet neither will comply with my orders.

Does anybody have an answer as to why they refuse to work?

I have a woodman companion, whom I've hired before, who says 'he'll fell some trees when he has the proper equipment and some proper trees'. He has a hand axe and I've given him a woodsman's axe, and there are a lot of loggable trees, not small ones.

2nd, though it may have been fixed in the latest patch- I hunted and killed an elk calf.  It weighed 350 pounds, had a 3 pound skin and 3 pounds of fat!

Suggestions / Trade Viewing, Ropes
« on: November 03, 2018, 02:21:10 PM »
I'd like to suggest that, when trading, your customer can see what is loaded on a pack animal, too, not just what the character is holding.

I suggest that a rope, which seems to be of use solely for making rafts/leashes, should be required to dress out a large kill, at least when a table is not available. You'd have to hang a kill to do the job in the wild.

I know that ropes can be used where a cord can be, but, why would one waste a more costly rope? Beyond rafts and leashes, there seems to be no useful purpose for ropes.

General Discussion / 3.52 Update?
« on: November 02, 2018, 01:05:30 AM »
My Steam game got an automatic update. I also have a game going on the original game from this site. Will that update be available for this version, too?

Gameplay questions / Kaumolais Weapons shortage?
« on: October 27, 2018, 03:48:53 AM »
I have ventured far and long to reach the Kaumo lands to complete the valuable fur mission (which I completed immediately with a superior squirrel! lol). My once Fine Kaumo spear has deteriorated to a merely decent and I hoped to find a better Kaumo spear.

Now, having visited 14 Kaumo villages so far, I'm saddened to say that I failed to find more than one Kaumo weapon (not available for trade, nor an improvement on my own).  The signature weapons of the Kaumo, non-existent? I'm baffled.

Gameplay questions / Stay!... Hey, that's on you!
« on: October 12, 2018, 05:29:14 AM »
I told my Companion to STAY while I tried to meet the Water Spirits at night. When I paddled back, he was floating, dead, in the rapids.

I hired another Companion. He was grievously injured by a Njerp, crippled, and dragged himself back to a shelter. When I crossed the rapids in a punt, he, too, drowned while following.

Is there a better way to make these guys STAY? These guys ruined my perfect record for returning Companions safely to their villages!

Btw, I hired a vagabond while traveling and he left me after we'd reached my homesite. It seems he can't leave the general area, due to the rapids? Anyway, I keep running into him 1 hex from where he left me. He's even returned and walked around in my cabin! He won't re-hire, not yet anyway.

Post Script: I've managed to drown another one. I guess the rule is that if they swim, which they must, there is a limit to their endurance and they'll drown if the raft trip is too long. Bah... Now I'm concerned about my animals drowning!

Gameplay questions / Ski exploit?
« on: October 08, 2018, 03:54:39 AM »
I've made a decent pair of skis and ski sticks. It took little time to achieve Grandmaster status with them. However, the drawback to them is that having both hands occupied slows down my response to encounters, having to UNwield and REwield for weapons. But, I've found a method which may be an exploit.

I use letter 'A' to wield ONE ski stick and can put a weapon in the other hand. When I have my skis on, with only one ski stick, it still says my movement is skiing. Also, I can free the ski stick hand by just using the letter key for it, thus allowing dual hand use immediately, without having to UNwield everything to free both hands, so achieving the best stats for my Kaumo spear.

So, my question is, is one hand skiing an exploit?

Gameplay questions / Healing others?
« on: October 06, 2018, 03:33:57 PM »
I accidentally shot my Companion (yes, really) and hurt him so badly that he can't walk. He's telling me he's leaving in two days (clearly holding no grudge). Is there any way I can utilize my physician skill on him? Or, on my dogs, whom I've ALSO shot in the past? For the record, I'm considered a Master with the bow...lol.

If I can't heal him, how is he going to get back to his village? Should I escort him back, before the two days is up? (Which would leave me dragging my crippled dog, too)

Also, as he says he's a master with axes, why does he wield his broad knife, even though I gave him a woodsman's ax?
