Suggestions / ~Can't find my way hoome~ (Clapton)

A Companion that finished his service to me has been hanging around my settlement area for many weeks now. That's not a concern, although pathing may be a problem for him.

The problem is, his only weapon now is the broad knife I gave him. He had other weapons and a handaxe but now he's carrying only the broad knife and stones and rocks. He's killing birds and killed one deer, at least he finished off the wounded deer he'd chased for a couple of days when it ran into my deadfall trap!

So, has he thrown away his weapons during hunting? I just gave him a bow and a bunch of arrows. If he keeps hanging around I guess I'll be finding arrows soon.

Gameplay questions / Game remembering meat drying?

I have meat drying in an outdoor cellar, in winter. When I use the : to get something from a cellar it usually tells me if there is meat drying and for how many more days. In fact, I have several batches of meat drying (from before the last patch) and it reports their status.

However, I just put in 300 elk cuts to dry and, when I check the cellar, it only tells me about the older meat that's drying. No mention of the new 300 cuts. Is this a new feature, or a bug?

I accidentally picked up a forest reindeer fur and tried to leave the village. I didn't want it and returned it TO A VILLAGER, so I thought. I used the option of 'I can't pay for it. Take it back'.

Anyway, I traded in another village for a fox fur and, upon returning to my shelter, dropped the FOX fur. When I looked for something in the shelter, later, I also found the forest reindeer fur in my inventory. Previously, I did NOT have any reindeer fur.

While doing daily Herbology checks on my unknown herbs, I use the 'S' key, then the 'E' key, and then select the herb in my inventory that I want to examine. I have on occasion somehow missed the 'S' key, then hit the 'E' key and inadvertently eaten the herb, instead. It's troubling when it's a poisonous herb, I can testify. I normally am alert to the notice saying that I need to look at something in my inventory, but, checking it twice daily, I occasionally mess up the proper sequence. I've learned to keep meadsweet available just for the occasion. 

So, is there an alternate method for examining my herb inventory?

I've been carrying dead Njerp bodies to a mountaintop for 'burial'. I had reached 7 stacks of bones but when I placed two more bodies up there, they were gone when I next visited, leaving no bones. I put two more bodies since and THEY, too, have disappeared, leaving no bones.

Is there some arcane rule about too many dead bodies in one place? Or, perhaps there's some graphics anomaly about the particular place I put those bodies?

I got a treasure location from a villager that wanted some Fine arrows. The directions sent me to find an island in Kuikka lands. There were 3 large rocks arranged in a triangle. The treasure was buried between them. So, I took a punt, paddle, and shovel and went searching. Sure enough, I needed the punt just to get around out there and the shovel was required to uncover a treasure. I've not had one hidden this way before. It's usually on a cliff somewhere.

The other thing that I ran across was a herb called ROSEROOT. Never seen it before. So, cool adventure! Has anyone else run across either of these?

Gameplay questions / Aggressive hunter?

While traveling to a trap/fence recently on the strategic map I spotted someone and decided to take a chance on whether or not it was a robber. It turned out to be a hunter and his dog. What was surprising is that he was immediately described as an "aggressive hunter" and had the usual red markers on his avatar. I wasn't sure what that meant, wondering if he was just involved in fighting some animal I had not yet seen.

So, I backed off 4 or 5 moves. He came directly after me. I backed off another 4 or 5 moves and, still, he came directly at me. I decided then that I wasn't going to risk him getting close enough for melee and started firing arrows. Eventually, he died but his dog ran off, wounded.

So, has anyone else run across anything like this, not counting Njerp, of course?

There's another odd thing I've run across twice. After encountering hunters, I've found that they've piled up 3 tree trunks and a 15' cord. A raft seemed implausible because it was far from water. I'm just curious what they intend to make.

I've found that a character can wear on his head, all at the same time:
1. Woolen cowl
2. Leather cap
3. Fur Hood
4. Mail cowl
5. Iron helm or a iron spectacle helm

Would this even be possible?

On another subject, I wonder about bird leather as a viable craft item. I'm having trouble visualizing a bird with skin thick enough to make leather, or large enough to make tanning it worthwhile.

Gameplay questions / Capture dog in the wild?

I've come across a dog running free in some mires. A while back I fought with, and killed, a Njerp and wounded his dog, which fled. I'm wondering, first, if this is that same dog.

Secondly, the dog allows me to approach it but it 'barks disagreement' when I try to put a rope on it. It also will not eat any meat I offer it. I've talked to it but get no options.

Has anyone yet had an event like this? Is it possible to recruit/capture the dog? I've saved my game, hoping that someone has some advice on this. Thanks!

I was using my healing skill on a nasty wound. I'd completed the first stage, 'Clean', and had just applied a dressing and herbs for the second stage when my Companion interrupted to say he'd be leaving in two days.

The problem is that, while I used up herbs and a bandage, the wound did not receive the 'Treated' status. I know, it's a rare occurrence. I just mention it because it's the nature of the Companion's interruption, in my experience, to halt ANY activity and force my character to turn and face the Companion, even if I'm advancing on a Njerp for battle! It's not clear that I got any value from the 2nd step in the healing.

Once again, one of my Companions, a hunter, has drowned during a crossing of the rapids in winter. Curiously, I was also traveling with an adventurer who survived the trek. More curious is that this was a RETURN trip, and the hunter had survived the initial crossing.

Does anyone have any insights into why they are drowning? Their burdens were unchanged and the crossing was in the morning and both travelers were fresh. Neither was wounded (we'd been building a new camp) and the passage was done quickly, no halts.

General Discussion / The Kalevala

It was interesting to see, on Steam, the celebration of the 10,000 days-long development of Unreal World.

I happened to be re-reading 'The Compleat Enchanter' in which travelers arrived within the Kalevala and joined Lemmenkainen in a fight against the folk of Pohjola. There was the 'Elk of Hiisi' and a wall of serpents that turned out to be just magicked lingonberries, stories of enormous banquets and challenges, of deadly assassins and outsized heroics.

Fun reading these and recognizing some aspects of the game borne out.

Bug reports / [Fixed - persists in 3.61] Raft left on strategic map

Upon returning to the campsite where I keep my raft, I have found it on the strategic map, only. In order to get to the tactical map I have to wield the paddle and move the raft out onto the river. THEN I can go to the tactical map and row back to shore with it. It has happened twice now.

A Njerp cut me up and I went to a Sage on the way back from the battle. After he 'healed' me, why doesn't my status change, as it does when I clean and dress my wounds? Does the Sage's healing actually do anything?

There is a spell that requires me to leave bread on a hill or cliff. Is the flatbread I can make sufficient for this spell?

The decent spear I gave my Companion was reduced to 'rough' during the battle. When he leaves, will the payment he expects be calculated as a rough or decent spear?

On that subject, I stopped using 'Blocking' in combat when I realized it damaged my weapon. Despite beating hundreds of animals to death with the blunt end, I've never had a weapon damaged by using it as a club. So, is it only the act of blocking which reduces a weapon's rating? Specifically, I've only had spears and javelins reduced in quality due to blocking. I'm not sure that metal weapons suffer that way.
