@ineedcords: You start at an age of 16, as shown by Plotinus' post above yours.

Suggestions / Re: [Suggestion] Metric measurements

The kilometres used on the world map can't be the same as a modern kilometre though:

"There is a cave in the north east, it is 10 kilometres away, about an hour's walk"

10 km/h through unmanaged forest and up a mountain?  I don't think so!   ;D
UrW uses a curious way of handling measurements: it rounds values up, so 10 km = 1-10, 20km = 11 - 21, etc. The same goes for inventory items.

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: Swimming fox
« on: January 22, 2020, 10:58:31 PM »
Animals can swim, yes. However, if it's too cold (like when the ice breaks under them), they'll eventually die of hypothermia if they don't manage to get back out of the water, either onto the ice or to the shore. The exception to this is owned dogs and companions, that usually (but not always...) follow the PC by swimming if the PC is out on a craft.

If this is easy to add I'd also like European units, kgs, meters, kms, whatever. It ruins a bit the immersion to see stuff I can't interpret on the spot.
Those are metric units, which is what the original post suggested. The discussion within the thread has since deviated in the direction of authenticity rather than usability for the non US crowd...

No, you can't perform the ritual with only two feathers. However, you have probably missed the other snares and their nearby feathers, as there tends to be multiple snares in the area (I'd say 3, but I can't swear on the number being fixed). Thus, you need to return there and search the tile some more (and I hope you have some way to return to that particular tile).

Since the game was made by Europeans I think it's more likely that the reason we don't have metric measurements is that metric measurements hadn't been invented in the iron age.
Apart from metric measurements being used in the game (world map distances are in km), the currently used values of the measurement units that are used most certainly weren't the ones used at the time, and probably differed by region anyway (the English propaganda about Napoleon being a short runt while he was at about average height for the time period in reality, was partially based on the French inch being longer than the British at the time, resulting in the French numeric values applied to British inches resulting in a short man; and the current length of an inch was nailed down by a Swede who sold various tools for measurements to industries, and had to come up with a standard value from the plethora of values used, leading to a de facto settlement of the value. Both of these examples are much later than the UrW time period, and it certainly wasn't more standardized at that time).

Gameplay questions / Re: Do traps only work if you are in the area?
« on: January 13, 2020, 12:25:34 AM »
How often you check traps depends on how you play. My characters tend to end up with a trap fence around the farm plots, which are placed some 3-5 tiles away from the homestead (which sits by rapids), and the traps are checked daily when not on a trip.

I'd recommend making a copy of your save (the folder with the character's name) before playing further (and preferably immediately after "succeeding" with the quest, but that's more for future oddities). The sooner the save is copied after something investigation worthy happens the better, as that gives Sami the best chance to get info out of it, should he want to investigate (which is often the case). Also note that you should make copies of "real" saves, as the state of the folder isn't complete if you put the game in the background to copy the save (which is one reason the save can be corrupted after a crash: crashes don't happen often, and corruption doesn't happen often on crashes, but it's definitely not fun when it does, so make regular backups, unless you have an irresistible save scumming urge you're fighting).

As the US doesn't seem to be willing to adopt the metric system in the foreseeable future, we're stuck with imperial measurements even after the empire has gone metric. It can also be noted that UrW uses a somewhat odd rounding up system, which means that you can't know the correct measurement anyway.

You'll probably have to learn to use the more common imperial units eventually, or struggle with every game aimed at the US market. Note that this doesn't mean I wouldn't welcome the metric measurements in UrW, but given that the imperial ones is a mess of arbitrary values with limited relations to each other (as opposed to the metric one, where the values are arbitrary, but the relations are in powers of 10), you'd get even weirder values in the game if metric, as the base units will have to stay the same regardless of the display.

1 pound (lbs) = 454 grams, i.e. a little under ½ kg
1 inch = 2.54 cm (don't think this unit is used in UrW)
12 inches = 1 foot (ft) = 30.48 cm, or about 1/3 of a meter (when using 30 cm as an approximation for the height of people, the 0.48 cm parts add up, so someone who's 6 ft 2 inches tall is roughly an inch taller than the 180 cm plus the inch part of about 5 cm would indicate, or you could just add half a cm per foot)
3 feet = 1 yard, i.e. a little shorter than a meter (don't think this unit is used in UrW)
1 (English) mile = 1609.3 meters, i.e. a bit over 1½ km (not used in UrW, and no even relation to the smaller length measurements)

Gameplay questions / Re: Rope used up

Yes, it's currently as designed. If you want to use the minimum length you'll have to cut off a piece of the correct length, else the whole length is used.

Gameplay questions / Re: meeting with water folk

I don't remember exactly what the wordings for that ritual is (my last character was killed by a Njerp, and I'm holding off creating a new one), but I think it says midnight. If that's the case, I'd strip naked at late night and then drop everything carried (I'm not sure an empty inventory is required, but it doesn't hurt, and that's what I've done). Then I activate "waiting". If nothing has happened after midnight changed to the next stage I'd quit the waiting, give up, and go home (after dressing up again, of course).

You should do your preparation and start the wait before the specified time (I don't know if you can succeed "inside" that time slot: I've always started during the previous time slot).

Firstly, make sure the rock actually meets all the requirements listed.

It's possible to use a craft to get there and undress and drop all the things when the time nears (to avoid getting too cold).
You don't activate a ritual as such, but just perform it by waiting on the rock (there's a waiting command available). I haven't tried sleeping, but the description doesn't mention it, so you probably shouldn't.

As others have mentioned, this kind of ritual doesn't seem to work every time, which makes it a bit hard to detect that you've done something wrong.

Thus, undress and wait. Give up if hypothermia sets in or the meeting time has been exceeded by a time description interval. If you're successful you'll get a message and the option to break off the waiting (and you should break it off, as the waiting is now over).

If it helps, you can consider a high quality bug report to be a twisted from of praise: You wouldn't put in the effort to report a bug is some piece of trash, would you?

As you can see, Sami tries to fix every bug found, and every bug fixed is a number of future bug reports that won't have to be written.

I make a backup after every play session. While crashes are rare, they do happen very rarely, and when they do, the cause is typically tricky to track down (all the easy ones were dealt with long ago). Also, crashes can corrupt the save completely if you're unlucky, or partially, as in your case, so a backup is definitely handy.

If you made a copy of your save immediately after the crash (i.e. before resuming), Sami might be able to get something out of it. If you didn't make a copy, I'd make one now to salvage whatever can be salvaged in terms of info in case Sami asks for it.

I'm unable to understand if your character was found swimming on the zoomed in map or if it was on the zoomed out one (as that's happened on one of my crashes), so it would probably be useful if you can clarify that. I'd also look for the missing items/animals on both the zoomed in map and the zoomed out one.

Gameplay questions / Re: Frostbitten toes!
« on: December 27, 2019, 11:41:10 AM »
Without socks (which you either will have to be lucky to find for sale in a village, or get equally lucky to find on a Njerp's corpse), you probably have to spend most of your time either indoors on massaging the numbness out of your feet close to yet another fire during the coldest days of the year.
Keeping hands and feet from getting frost bitten is tricky before you get hold of that wool goodness, and may not be that easy afterwards either.
