General Discussion / Re: Things are going pretty well in 3.70b

Very nice. I just started playing this again after a long hiatus and made an Owl Tribe character in the spring in the northern Owl Tribe territory, with the "hurt, helpless and afraid" start condition just to see if I could do it. There was a lot of starvation at the beginning to say the least. I started with just a small knife. After days of starvation, I found a village, made torches, traded them for yarn, and then used the yarn to make my own fishing rod with a wooden hook.

I travelled to the northern sea. I had "adequate" fishing skill (it was a little below 40), and I caught enough fish for a while to keep me from starving to death, buying me some time for my injuries to heal, but the fish didn't last long. Soon I ran out of bait and the fish dried up for days on end. I completely forgot to sacrifice any of my fish though. Maybe the spirits were mad at me? I fished all day for several days and got absolutely nothing, and I was starving again.

I gave up on fishing and headed back inland. Owl Tribesmen are hunters after all. After several more days and several failed attempts, eventually my weak, starving character ran down and cornered a reindeer in an open bog and beat it to death with a crude club. After eating my fill, I traded the fur and most of the meat for a northern bow and some arrows. Things are looking up now!

Since then, I've shot and killed a badger and I just ran down a second reindeer. Looks like I'm gonna survive, but where to go from here I'm not sure.

General Discussion / Re: Driik fortification works against them.

I saw this same thing happen earlier. I was trying to stalk some Njerp guy outside the walls of a Driik village. At one point he surprised me and charged at me out of some trees but I ran away. I was too cowardly to engage him because of the whole perma-death nature of this game and I don't have much experience with fighting. I just wanted to follow him to see what happened if he made it to the village.

After running away and then trying to relocate where he went, I heard the sounds of fighting going on off in the distance. The Njerp had found a lone Driik housewife wandering around outside the walls on the opposite side of where the entrance was. The rest of the villagers were all enraged and swarming around inside the wall, trying to get out there to fight, but the wall blocked them from going out there and helping her.

Turns out that was the world's toughest housewife though. When I finally circled around the walls and got to the scene of the fight, I found her standing over the Njerp's corpse. She must have had a dozen stab wounds but she slaughtered that guy. I guess I shouldn't have run away after all.  ;D

Maybe it could be fixed by just adding a couple more entrances around the walls of each town and widening them so the AI villagers could more easily get through.

That's not so bad! At least the bear didn't kill you. I lost my last two characters to bears. On my first character, I found a bear, attacked it and it killed me. Now that was pretty stupid. On the next character, a bear walked right into my just-finished, brand-new log cabin and slaughtered me in my bed.

Gameplay questions / Re: How to hunt seals?
« on: October 17, 2017, 07:06:26 AM »
I know that if they bleed out underwater, you can find their corpse floating not too far away.

I killed a seal by hitting it with a broadhead arrow from a treeline while it was sunning itself on a little rocky outcrop offshore. It dove into the water, and I went back to camp to get my raft. When I got back, I searched the waters and found its corpse floating maybe a hundred meters or so to the north. That's the only seal I've ever killed though.

I got into a scuffle with a bunch of pigs out in a bog, all while I had a boat strapped to my back. I don't know why but I found it really funny.

I was on my way to a distant village to see their sage, and the best way to get there is to carry my raft across a wide open bog to a lake, paddle across the lake and then up a river. Well on my way across the mire, I ran into a herd of wild pigs. Seeing an opportunity, I tossed some javelins into the herd, lightly wounding one of them. I spent the next several minutes chasing pigs all over the swampy morass, eventually wounding another one and separating it from the rest of the herd.

I was still carrying the heavy raft during all of this, since I didn't want to drop it and forget where I left it during the chase. My character was tired, and I was trying to line up a killing throw against that isolated, wounded pig. Right at the exact instant I was ready to throw, I took a heavy blow from behind me. It made me jump in my chair. One of the other pigs had separated from the herd, charged me and rammed itself right into my backside! I didn't even know they could do that (I'm still fairly new to this game). It knocked the javelin right out of my hands. It kept attacking me as I frantically pulled out my spear, and it caused a pretty serious injury to my arm along with some minor ones. For a minute I thought I was gonna get torn apart by pigs, but I managed to stab it and it took off running.

I turned around and continued the chase against the other wounded pig, and even though I was injured and over-encumbered, I managed to keep up with it until it had exhausted itself, then finished it off. The mental image I had of my big burly Kaumo guy chasing and getting knocked around by pigs while running through a bog with a boat strapped to his back made me laugh.
