@ineedcords no luck with the map I was playing, so I started a new game and tried to pick a location which looked to be near river areas (though it is hard to differentiate lakes vs. rivers on the starting location screen).  Once in game I was able to try a number of locations and this time hit a valid fishing spot fairly quickly.  Thanks again for the reply and help!

Running v3.72 (stable).  Created a new character following the New Player Guide from the wiki.  This suggests the, "I want to be a fisherman" scenario, and the "Living in the Wild" course.  This starts you out with a fishing pole.

Following the course goals, very quickly you get to the fishing goal which instructs you to fish.  Standing next to the water, facing the water, and attempting active fishing results in the message, "You should find a better spot!  From this very location you can't expect to catch any fish".

Tried moving to many locations all facing water and the same message occurs.  Must be something obvious I'm missing, but the course instructions don't say anything more specific about the fishing task.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
