Gameplay questions / Re: Is injury >100% supposed to guarantee death?
« on: January 15, 2022, 10:46:35 PM »
Injuries over 100% normally guarantee death but the robbers thing is designed to always be nonfatal, so your injuries are reduced before you wake up.
That's what I surmised as well. So should I feel greasy about continuing to play this character or not?

Are you sure it was the injuries that were over 100%, rather than the total penalties?

In my current playthrough I received injuries in excess of 100% (104% to be precise)
Spoiler: show
(doing the robbers quest if that matters.)
I got the red screen. Then I regained consciousness (with an injury of 86% displaying.) Is this a bug or is sustaining injuries in excess of 100% not necessarily supposed to be fatal?

Modding / Re: German Shepherd Dog Sprite

Since you asked what I think ...

I don't like it when people try to introduce things that don't belong in the historical context of the game and then 'because reasons' it. I love this game because it tries to stay true to the actual history and isn't full of modern cultural 'pollution.' Every other game in existence is polluted by 21st century orthodoxy. Leave UrW alone!

But as it happens the sprite doesn't look anything like a German shepherd so it is fairly inoffensive.

Another important use of birds is to train the hide working skill. If you use bark for tanning you can use the fat as a sacrifice for the spirits.

However, hide working takes a lot of time, so you should be prepared to butcher bird carcasses without skinning them to get more time to find more food in some early situations.
Hideworking on elk or bear or other large animals might take a lot of time. On birds? Not so much. And I think you can trade your bird leather for 2 or 3 cuts and that will compensate you for your time.

I've acquired flowers for people on a number of occasions and they have yet to eat them. I wouldn't be concerned.

I once met an old man who was wearing a tree lichen overcoat, moss trousers, and a grey hat. And he looked very stylish. But I haven't been able to find those items anywhere.

But seriously, I'm not sure if fine/masterwork kaumolais spears are in the game, but I don't think I've seen one if they are.

I've seen one masterwork javelin and a hare (iirc) ran away with it.

This just happened to me too in 3.71. Obviously not game-breaking, but as my 'objective' for this playthrough is to complete the tutorials it was a little aggravating. (And yes, I'm pretending it hasn't completed and won't kill a bear until I discover a new spell.)

I'm having a similar issue, though I'm still just in Late Seedtime month. But at the beginning of Seedtime month I was able to plant a couple of dozen crops and then when I moved on to the next patch (at midnight fwiw) the game said 'the soil is not yet warm enough to be prepared' and it has been that way ever since. So I have a couple of dozen crops growing and right next to them the rest of the soil is too hard to dig.

My recollection from previous versions is that the weather warmed up sort of like clockwork before, so that first day of Seedtime month and you could plant. I get that that is unrealistic, in that there will be some variation from year to year, but this alternate scenario isn't exactly realistic either (if this is working as intended.) I've also had the ice thaw and then return a few times on the lakes whereas before if I'm recalling correctly, it all pretty much disappeared at once and stayed gone. I think it would be fairly unusual for ice to return in the spring, barring a really freakishly cold day.

Edit: Of course the next day after I post this (still Late Seedtime) it lets me plant again ...

I started to make a small deadfall trap at my 'home base' just to make sure I had the items I needed. I cancelled making it (because I want to place it somewhere else.) Now the game says I am carrying a total of 36 lbs even though I have 2 slender trunks (100 lbs total) in my inventory, amongst other things.

Edit: When you go to the zoomed out map, the weight comes back. So it can't really be used as a significant exploit.

Wait, you can DIE of starvation?  :D

If you're having trouble hunting, make sure you have 0% encumbrance. (Not 1%, not 2%, 0%.) Bookmark the tile where you dropped your stuff and go back and get it after you do the run/rest technique and eventually kill the breathless animal with a nearby rock. (Try to leave your stuff in a clearing or make a mental note of the trees/terrain around it so that you can find it easily when you go back. Ravens might steal your food.)

I rarely see prey from mountains or hills. I wouldn't seek high ground. When you're trudging through the forest sometimes the view just opens up and that's your best best imo. Also when your view opens up in one direction it often opens up in a different direction as well, so change your direction when that happens to take a quick peek behind you before you resume travelling.

When you see a deer/elk/lynx, etc on the zoomed out map, try to calculate where it is. (Like, 5 up and 6 right from me, or 2 left, 3 down from that mountain or that small lake, or whatever.) Then go to that tile, bookmark it and zoom in. Look for tracks. Walk around a bit. Then visit all 8 tiles around that tile and walk around a bit in each one. 90% of the time you will find tracks. If you still haven't found it, visit the 16 tiles (did I do the math right?) around those 8 tiles. I would be surprised if more than 0.1% of the time you won't find tracks if you performed this correctly.

Suggestions / Re: Finding my arrows

Fighting Njerp warriors are likely to make you both rich AND dead, unless you quit while on top, and even then a chance encounter will probably be the end if nothing else has claimed you before that.

What motivated the Njerps?
Perhaps someone misused a pronoun, or forgot to wear their face diaper, or honored their ancestors, or didn't hate their own people enough to suit the Njerp. Hard to say.

I meant to get to this sooner.

In spite of being grossly inefficient and bumbling my way through this, I managed to smoke all the meat (no stale meat, no spoiled meat) and begin the soaking process on the leather on my first attempt.

https://youtu.be/4jYcqInX4K8

Verdict: As expected, not a bug.

And just because my first attempt was so cringeworthy (albeit successful) I made a 2nd attempt that went a little more smoothly:

You were quoting me before. And now you accuse me of something that is a significant distortion of what I said and fail to quote me. Is that a coincidence?

Let's try an honest summary instead:

In this thread you linked a recent blogpost from your blog. So I read it. In your blog you are very open about certain aspects of your personal life. Far more open than most people are. So I felt free to weigh in.

You mentioned that you have been unable to pay your bills (or at least that your monthly income is well below your monthly bills) and also that you are seeing a new-age therapist and you linked her website, where her rate of $100-$125 per session is listed.

To me, that was a red flag, since many of these people are charlatans who prey on lonely and vulnerable people so I diplomatically expressed my altogether reasonable concern which I thought might be shared by others who had read the blog post:

"This hypno-gal seems like she might be exploiting your loneliness and her going rate seems awfully high for someone who is having trouble paying the bills."

To which you replied:

"I do understand that kind of concern. But don't worry; that hypno-gal is my personal friend. She knows my situation and offered to work with me for free. I don't have therapy bills to pay. But I was struggling with winter tyres for the car, and with replacing the water pump in my well." [emphasis mine]

So at that point, in your own words, my concern was understandable. I made the not-unreasonable assumption that you were paying the professional new age therapist who was providing you with professional new age therapy services. You clarified that she is a friend who is offering her services to you for free.

I then felt relief that my concerns, though understandable, were based on a faulty assumption (that you were paying for these services) and expressed my happiness that I was able to clear up that potential concern for others.

"If my contribution here has been nothing more than to allay potential concerns that any donations to this campaign might end up lining the pockets of an e-girl, it has been worthwhile."

Anyway, clearly this is going nowhere. You seem determined to take offense rather than to reflect on well-intended constructive advice. I'll leave you with this hours-old video from John Doyle, who touches on many of the themes I raised and who does so far more eloquently and persuasively than I ever could.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCdvobrAj2w
