General Discussion / Some experience with the new cooking mechanics

I really love the cooking changes! Cooking with dried meat is great and easier access to a basic pot is as well. Thank you Sami!

I think overall cooking is still only really worth it for role-playing since my character would have happily munched on awful elk cuts and raw turnips instead of cooking them into decent dry elk meat soup. But baking flatbread, cooking porridge, cooking soups that included vegetables etc is really fun for me even if there isn't really an in-game reason to do it - I just imagine my character would get really tired of dry bland tough meat and roasted fish after a while.

Some things I noticed while trying the cooking - maybe these could help with tinkering and balancing things:

- I was not able to cook fish soup in a birch bark pot: https://www.unrealworld.fi/forums/index.php?topic=7478.0

- Cooking with dried meat in a birch bark pot worked but it was only possible to make a single portion, which resulted in 1kg of soup. This took my character 3 hours to prepare (cooking skill 40). This was enough for a single meal and a bit. This makes the birch bark pot not really that useful for cooking soup as the effort/time spent is too great for the amount in my view (I would find twice the amount or half the time more reasonable, which would mean 3 hours spent preparing enough meals for the day).

- My character was able to cook 2 portions of rye porridge in the birch bark pot (0.3kg of flour, 0.9kg of water for 1kg of porridge). This took about 30 minutes (cooking skill 40) and was enough for a single light meal. This feels almost fair, but maybe 3 portions or 15 minutes cooking time would feel more reasonable.

- The error message when the pot was to small read "Capacity of the selected container is too small for the purpose." and "Birch-bark pot doesn't work as boiling pot". The first part makes sense but the second may be confusing, because it does work as a boiling pot, it's just too small.

Did anyone else try the new cooking options in the beta yet?

Bug reports / [Fixed - 3.86] Birch bark pot too small for fish soup

The birch bark pot can hold 1kg as far as I saw. So it is not possible to cook a single portion of fish soup with this pot, since the recipe wants 0.5 kg of fish 0.7 kg of water 0.2 kg of vegetables. (Side note, this is displayed as "0.5 kg lbs of raw or salted fish" etc). I only tested fish but meat is probably the same.

Boiling a 3kg pike using a pot results in 1kg of boiled pike in the pot.
Boiling 3x 3kg pikes using a pot also results in 1kg of boiled pike in the pot.

There is no way to boil a pike without losing most of it (my character was tired of roast pike and did not have a any vegetables for pike soup so wanted to try boiled pike using the new birch bark pot).

I would expect my character to use only as much as can fit in the pot or to abort trying to boil the pike(s) since they are too big for the pot, rather than the food simply disappearing.

Probably not new but I noticed in the beta trying out the new birch bark pot.

Will a fire be required to light a shingle and will it be possible to light a fire from a shingle?

Was it ever confirmed? It is still XS in the current version and lake reed roots do seem extremely nutritious.
