Actually, you can get sword skill relatively high with your starting skills as well.

The battlesword has a higher attack bonus (5) vrs the attack bonus of an axe (4), which means the battlesword will hit more often and score more counter attacks than a battle axe.  Furthermore, you can still boost swordsmanship if you are inclined while setting up a custom character.

That would give axes a nice boost actually, since they kind of fall behind both spears and swords.

1 is plenty, and you can check them once every 6 hours.  I'd check once every 8 hours though, because it would suck to get the timing wrong.

Cannibalism is currently available in vanilla as well, although it requires that you be starving by about 10% or more I think.

It isn't obvious, but the kota building components only need to be adjacent to the kota framework.  You can build a kota up to 5x5 with 3x3 worth of space inside if you have enough furs.  The center tile is supposed to be kept clear so you can build a fire there to keep warm.

54 logs, 20 boards (1 additional log or felled tree), 2 slender trunks, and 35 stones.

Roughly 60 ingame hours of continuous man hours work.  In practice at least twice that long to account for the need to sleep.  This also assume that you have gathered everything beforehand.  Also assumes you are working with masterwork equipment and that you don't have a bad result (in this case the work takes much longer than normal), so factor in another 50% increase in the time it takes if your character is average.

Assume that it will take a little over a week to build once you have all the materials in the spot you want to build at.

Yea, I don't understand why this game decided to build in a suicide command.

 Since files are changed as you play (as time passes) when you close a character, the files have most likely been changed from the point of loading. If you choose to not save "make consistent save" the file data must be abandoned.

No it doesn't.  You can just abandon the changes.

How exactly does tracking work? Should I keep using it everywhere on the zoomed out map to find animals? Or does it only works on the zoomed in map? And in the zoomed in map it only works above tracks I'm already seeing?

I'm folowing the basic quest to learn how to play and I'm stuck in the part about creating a raft. I don't have any rope/cords, I know how to make cords from leather, but the problem is, I can only find squirrels and it takes forever to make 1 cord from their leathers. Am I doing something wrong in this game?

 Tracking 'can' rarely notify of tracks on a travel map tile (zoomed out), Tracks need to be underfoot to be 'read' on local map (zoomed in).
You can take off a piece of clothing, and cut some cords from the item. cords can be cut from fur, leather and cloth.

Cord no longer works as rope unfortunately.  Depending on the time of year, you can go up to a birch tree and select Peel Bark.  This will get you a lump of birch-bark, that you can use to create a birch bark rope.  This birch bark rope can be used to create a raft.
