A story of pain and the divines The hot summer sun laid like a tortuous rock on Viggu's back. The mosquitoes, which he had grown used to by now, laid like a thick fog in the air. They invaded most parts of the body, including the ears and nostrils, lest you had coated yourself in special tribal tinktures which for some reason kept them at bay. Some of the elders, back in the village, had told Viggu that mosquitoes were signals of protective and helpful spirits, though it was unclear exactly whom was protected by these pestuous things.

His first hunting trip with his father, Juggo, had gone well as of yet. Last evening they had continued their long walk upstream, checking traps and laying new ones where they could. Though having found no large game as of yet they still had more than half of the stream to cover, and were hopeful it would provide for them. They still had left some of the food they had brought along in case of emergency.

Laying himself to bed at their shelter in the evening, Viggu stared up towards the star-filled yet halfly sunny sky. He felt as if he was gazing into the endless distant of generations to come and generations that had gone. He felt at peace, envisiong himself and his future as finally being a true man once he had completed this first hunting trip of his. So important was the ritual of the hunting trip to his tribe (the Kuikka-tribe), that not only could you not marry at all before it had been completed, but each male was expected to make his own Kota and live for himself once he returned from the trip. Viggu had been preparing it back at home for weeks upon weeks, decidingly furnishing it as best he could. Though he would've wished several times help from his friends and family, none such could be given as per the customs of the tribe.

He fell asleep, yet woke again to a quiet and rasping sort of sound. Realising his father was likely out strolling early in the morning, Viggu thought naught of it and attempted heading back to his blissful slumber. Not long afore, however, he was jolted awake by a sudden stirr, a rasped scream that was let out. It was his father, and this was his scream of pain, death, and release from his world. A striking bolt of energy hit Viggu as he rushed towards the lean-to where his father had been sleeping a short distance away on the mire. He found him dead, his eyes closed and his body stiller than ever Viggu could've imagined. The blood-stained mire gave a orange-ish color that was disturbing and sickening to Viggu's eyes. He felt a void, or perhaps an immense pain (he was much to shocked and disturbed to tell which) as he gazed upon what had been his idol and image of the world having drifted away. There were no signs of big struggle, and death had come fast for Juggo. Before Viggu could gather his thoughts further to any sort of emotional slap across the proverbial face, he heard the roar of a beast that couldn't be far away. With the instincts of a true-grown man, Viggu quickly took all supplies he could from his father, all he could need and headed towards the nearest bit of covered forest to make sure he himself was not in range of whatever foul beast that had stricken his father.

With tears swelling in his eyes and his head feeling both full and heavy, he wandered seemingly without aim through the forest. Before long, he had lost his bearings. With no idea where he was, or how to reach his home, he fell to his knees. He cried, screamed and embraced the anguish of what had happened. Whatever creatures might have followed him, the ungodly screams and pure pain flowing from his throat had by now surely driven them away. He might have done this for an hour, he might have done it for a day. Again, he could not tell what really went on. All he knew was pain and pain ten-fold.

When his eyes were drier than a fire, and he felt as if he was wholly empty, he rose to his feet once more. He looked at the seemingly endless rows of trees and remembered the tales he had been told of what happened to each person wen they died. When you died, you left to join the spirit world in the far north, beyond the sea. So the elders said, and so it was for Viggu. He had pondered this in his crying and now looked decidedly at what he presumed (judging by the sun) to be north. He knew his mission, and he knew he could not fail. His tribe and home be damned, he could not bare to come back without his father. He was determined. He would travel as far north as he could, and he would find his father. He would bring him back from the land of the dead, or join him there.

Using Sami's work in a Feature Film In 2014, Sami posted a video he recorded outdoors in the middle of the night. A fox was crying out very loudly. I immediately asked him if I could borrow the audio from it and he said I could, as long as I gave proper credit to him whenever appropriate.

In 2019, I finally released a feature film that I've put 4 years into! I sampled the audio from Sami's video, the fox's wail was perfect for 2 scenes in the movie, it is heard around 12:00 and 50:00. Also, in Sami's recording, there is a whirring noise in the background that I used as an ambient effect. The soundtrack and ambient sound design in this movie was done very thoughtfully.

I haven't played URW or visited this forum since 2015, before the forum was recreated. I played URW a lot and I thoroughly enjoyed this community. I want to share my finished movie with you all, and I hope you like it. It's a drama about overcoming insomnia and challenging the status quo of conventional society. I put a ton of time and energy into this project and I'm trying to get it off of the ground...

Here is a 5-minute behind-the-scenes Director's Story - https://vimeo.com/350330067
And here's the full film. It's not free, but it costed me everything to get it to this point and buying it helps me recover my losses - https://vimeo.com/ondemand/bentonsomnolence

Inspired by URW, I bought for my dog... ...canned food made of reindeer and of elk, to eat like his in-game namesake  :D

The reindeer smelled like any other dog food, but the elk was SO gamey that my family complained. The dog absolutely loved it, though.

Now if only I can find canned bear for him to try  ;D

I love this game I love this game and here is the proof  :)

The Steam counter obviously doesn't show older non-Steam hours, I expect the actual total to be at least 3 times what's shown.
Huge number for the last two weeks have a reason; I've got Covid-19, oxygen levels was pretty bad for a while but OK now and this game came to the hospital with me on my laptop.
It turns out when you're Hurt, Helpless and Afraid in iron age Finland, it helps with modern age recovery...

On a side note, I can't wait for the new version beta to be out.

Re: LiberaPay - Add as an Additional Payment Option to Support UrW Development? I have been using Libera Pay for 4 years, never got a cent from them, perhaps as Ineedcords said, people are reluctant to use a newish, unknown method even if it is NOT a faceless multinational blood sucker.

I would have added my link here but the forum does not run scripts.

I'm currently working on an animal sprite overhaul, what do you guys think? Hey guys, I've been working on a couple of animal sprites recently.

I've been a fan of Galgana's creature sprites (incredible, especially when compared to the vanilla sprites) for a long while and I thought I might as well try my hand at making sprites reminiscent of their work. These are still obviously my own creations (thanks MSPaint), but I wanted to create something that could be used in tandem with their mod, to fill the gaps more or less. Who knows, I may even create my own overhaul that covers all of the animals. If any of you have any suggestions on where I can improve or where I've f**ked up feel free to let me know. I've also dabbled with the rain and snow, it's always bugged me that you lose so much visibility in these weather conditions, but that's for another topic.

Here are the sprites, a humble badger, and beaver (already done the full sprites, these are just teasers).

EDIT: I modified the badger/beaver sprites and created two more, the glutton (wolverine) and polecat

A big thank you to the Enormous Elk team Greetings everyone,

I just felt like sharing this story and at the same time, give my thanks to the Enormous Elk team for creating this masterpiece of a game.

I have accidentally stumbled upon this game many years ago, when I was just a kid, perhaps 12 or 13 years old. Considering that I had no income to speak of, and I came from a country that paying money for video games was a luxury that not many could afford (Romania) at that time, the model adopted by this studio in which they would offer a older version of their game for free, with the possibility to donate, was a blessing and a breath of fresh air.

I have many fond memories and cool stories with this little game, and with each update, and as I grew older, I would find myself returning to Unreal World in order to check what cool features have been implemented.

Now, 15 years later, I return once more. Older, with a family of my own, a job and a new house, to repay the debt that I have owned for granting me the pleasure of playing this game.

Bought a official copy off steam, and started a new campaign, and all I can say is that the nostalgia of it all hit me hard, as well as the random wolf that decided to attack me from behind my character while butchering another wolf.

Once again, a big thank you to the Enormous Elk team, and a big thank you for the business model you follow. You managed to make my childhood a little bit more brighter.

Re: Generated map image
Just wanted to share this, was able to generate an image of the game map from data and save it to file, kind of neat to look at.
Thanks for sharing this. Agreed, pretty neat. Opens up a lot of external possibilities.

In your embedded screenshot, it appears, this completely bypasses the fog of war (FoW), is that bypass, mandatory by nature or optional?
Did you create any open source code on this or alternatively is there any public information/writing on your experiment?

Heres the gist of it;

here I'm using memory to read/write the bitmap data.
but you could alternatively pull similar data from the files described here:

According to URW Fandom Wiki - [Playing With UrW Files], WORLD.PLM contains the map with fog of war included.

Possibly in memory somewhere as well.

Also note, completely possible to render the full map tiles (hence storing the file paths). Was working on a prototype in the old URWCharacterMenu, which was more or less a successful proof of concept. -- tried to find an old picture of it, but couldn't :(.

edit: Oh also something i forgot to mention; I get the tile ID's/Path info from debug_ter-tiles.txt, located in the URW folder while you're playing.

edit2: saw your post in suggestions, working on something for it...
