Re: Need help with a certain character build  I think (imo) unless you are roleplaying some ideology, random roll or selected the game, especially the early game is about survival.
#1 Essentials, food, shelter, water.
A) Food is an ongoing theme and stress injector. Though I've not done it recently, it used to take a very long time to starve to death. The game will
frequently.. and more frequently "Alert" you to build anxiety and adrenaline.
Food collection early on, depending on season and herbology, berries are the only 100% safe plant to harvest (assuming you can't identify some plant or grass). Meat is the primary survival food as well as for long term security.
a) Fish are locatable, close by, in almost every area (body of water large/deep enough to fish). You are allowed to fish with many items; rock, stone, staff. javelin, club, fishing pole, net, trident. Only fishing pole and net target more than one fish at a time. Fishing provides a possible means to security.
b) Traps, A few versions/years back placing a trap would "cause the start of NPC activities" in usually inactive areas of the world (areas where you are not). This could be exploited to the point that placing a large deadfall trap on a one square tile in a river for example, would "Cause" and animal to spawn on that spot. This used to make trapping very simple as you can guess. Sami has since made AI changes, spawn rule changes, and tied much of a traps success on your trapping skill. Small deadfall traps are great for areas around you where you see small mammals and birds, if you can bait them your chances "may" be improved. Loop snares require resources but can be effective for catching small mammals and birds and are easily moved. Large deadfall, pit/spike pit and fence require more effort/resources but can have huge upside. Placement as mentioned before does require a bit more thought/planning. Trapping provides a possible means to security.
c)Active hunting is when you actually pursue an npc. Rocks are great tools for hunting squirels and slow birds when you find them. Ranged attacks and chase are valid prospects but can be difficult early on. Chasing large game is difficult to succeed without a plan. Large marsh areas are a good opportunity to chase one to to weakness. Using rivers, lakes, seas or other deep water you can limit the animals ability to escape and swim to weakness. Active hunting provides a difficult means to security, especially early on.

Once you are secure you can get into better stuff
With a knife and an axe you can survive anything!

Re: Character Dementia It was common to have the cattle inside the house, maybe they did it only in winter.

Forum crops my image but the animals are just to the right.

Birds of Prey: Nuisances or a Farmer's Best Friend? I've been kicking this around for a while, ever since I had a resident goshawk a few games back, so has anyone else had the positive experience of local predatory birds keeping your fields safe?

Mine made my dogs insane trying to steal their food every 20 minutes, thus making me insane, and the interruptions to every single task were not appreciated. However, I did remove all of my bird-kill traps around my cabin in (somewhat irritated) reverence for what is surely a well regarded animal spritually. As a kind of thanks/lucky AI, over the rest of that summer and fall, I would find mutilated, half eaten carcasses of everything small and unfriendly to fields, from rabbits to mallard ducks, never saw another wayward badger, and had every single plant of my glorious little hemp field survive to harvest. Wasn't my dogs, cause they never noticed anything but the damn bird, were tied up far from the carcasses, and they didn't help much on my guys that didn't get a hawk guardian anyway.

So maybe worth leaving some food out to attract a goshawk if you want to be a farmer. Might have just been me, but this was worthwhile organic pest control. I feed my dogs a mash of various uncooked small animal meats, and they/hawk didn't seem to prefer anything. Next time I want a bird I'll skip the dogs all together though, and if you could find bird of prey eggs and hatch them in a later update I would lose my mind.

More ambient sounds Seeing that the game has such high potential for letting you immerse yourself in the (unreal) world it creates, i think it would be just that more awesome if there were more ambient sounds based on location, season, or time of day, etc. It doesn't have to be something terribly complex. Just a sound file for forest during the day and during the night, one for forest during winter, a village, maybe when near the seaside or a river. Stuff like that.

These days, when i play, i like to keep this running in the background, and i feel it ads a lot to the atmosphere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdIJ2x3nxzQ . And i found another one that will work very well during the winter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4P5oxIWOiU

But it would be tedious to change between a night sounds, day sounds, village, seaside etc on Youtube. So that's why i think the game's immersion would profit quite a lot from implementing these soundscapes

Re: Kaumolaiset to drik Board makeing GET RICH FAST
I don't really see the point in this approach. If you want to be rich, instead of grinding your way trough boards and living off milk, just mod the game and turn rocks into expensive things.

Although I see why it may feel pointless to work the game to "get rich quick", I definitely think some people need to feel in control of a game when they are first starting out, just to learn the basics. Pseudo-exploits (board trading, smoking in saunas, pit-trapping villages) will stop some people from getting frustrated and quitting before they get into it, so I think a guide like this is cool.

I know, one day, I will take the training wheels off and make a character who sucks at fishing and manages to survive the early game. One day...

Edit: Added quote.

Please don't misinterpret my reply, This is a valid method to get a leg up as well as a valid role playing philosophy.

Interesting world generation So I was rafting through islander territory and stumbled upon this... There's only two houses but there's like 7 people.. I wonder how they live there. Also before that I found a tiny settelment, not even in islanders territory that had only one old man and 2 houses.. Guess who took care of that establishment 8)

More trees! So I pondered this recently. The city/village I live in (in Finland) is named after an oak tree. Then it hit me. There are no oak trees in URW (afaik).

More tree diversity anybody?  ;D

Re: Easiest way to trap njerps? There are some problems with you intended approach:
- My experience with traps vs warriors indicates they're rather useless for that purpose. It might work better to harass civilians, though.
- Killing them one at a time works only if your character is faster. Otherwise the first one will magically summon other villagers, and eventually the whole village is following you. If you're fast enough I guess you can run and lose them that way, but running with armor is a lethally bad idea (the running speed equals normal walking speed within 50 meters, and keeps dropping until it reaches zero).
- Engaging warriors equipped with bows without a bow and using trickery is very dangerous. The buggers are deadly shots. Doing it without heavy armor is probably lethal rather quickly, since it only takes one unlucky arrow to knock your character unconscious.

Feed the Njerpez Foundation needs your donations! tl;dr New challenge, deliver one full bag of grain to the interior of a building in EVERY Njerp village in your world without killing anyone inside their territory (maiming pursuers is acceptable). Bonus points: return all your Njerpez scimitars, that their owners' families might find peace in war.

Now folks, I know what you're thinking, it's exactly what I was thinking when I first heard of the FNF and all the great work they're doing out there in southeast Finland. LoLotov, the Njerps are the enemy! Why should we feed the enemy? Well, there are a couple big reasons I'll tell you folks about. First off, for the pure humanity of it! It seems like the Njerp children put up less and less of a fight and get more and more skeletal each time we massacre their villages. There just isn't enough food in Njerpland to keep the children in fighting shape! But our economy is being hit too! Even the trophy scouts seem to be getting smaller and smaller, and that's having a direct effect on the livelihoods of all you tribals out there, whether you want to admit it or not. Most of our iron comes from slaying Njerps, and if they're too weak to carry it, we ourselves will run out! And in case you needed more reason, the spirits themselves command that you help! I was minding my own business the other day, running an augury on some kuikka entrails, you know... the usual... and I saw the signs plain as day. The spirits want YOU to bring your excess food to a local Feed the Njerpez Foundation drop-off box! They offer convenient locations at any Njerpez village, and swift service is guaranteed! Just be sure to bring any other valuables you don't need anymore too, the FNF always needs funding folks! Folks, I hate doing these long-winded speeches, you know that about me, but this is an issue that's very close to my heart, and I hope you'll find it closer to yours too now that you know what the great folks at FNF stand for. We can keep the Njerpez around a little longer if we all just work together, so open your hearts, open your rucksacks, and let's feed those Njerps, folks!

[Applause sign turns on]
