Re: Rattle of death They’re handy prompts. I’ve also utilized predator treed squirrels to walk to the aggroing predator, and then whack them on the noggin. Then get the squirrel in a tree. Usually a fox, but at least once got a glutton like that.

Which reminds me to write a suggestion to amend weasel, pine-marten… lynx, bear (maybe others I forget about) behavior to climb in to trees to escape and to go to try to kill roosting birds and get squirrels.
Also mangled birds should still yield feathers, even if the skin itself is useless.

Going canoeing - from Koivula to Driik, so to speak. The year off from coding has truly brought my way something else than sitting in front of the computer.
Next up is sitting in a canoe instead - and paddling some 120 kilometers through Kokemäki River all the way to reach the sea at Gulf of Bothnia.
Well, luckily I get to stand and walk as well as we'll be camping outdoors.
This expedition is about to start tomorrow, and I'm sure you'll be hearing more about it when I come back.

Everything's packed and I'm off to canoe - for a week or so.

This is is river a route which you can paddle in UnReal World too.
The world map of the game is always somewhat randomized, but you can still find some river floating from Koivula to Driik.
This can be imagined as being the Kokemäki River.
In reality the route is 120 kilometers long, but the game world map scale is smaller.
When put on the game world map the route would be like this.

Our destination is an island in the Gulf of Bothnia about 10 kilometers from the mainland.
If everything goes okay we'll reach it in a week.
And who knows if this inspires me to tweak the paddling code in the game just a little bit - when it is time to sit in front of the computer again.

Autumn nights, coding nights With the diminishing daylight, on the chilly and rainy autumn nights, I have occasionally found myself coding the game again. Nothing too strenuous, but hunting some bugs and tweaking functions here and there
It has felt quite fun, and quite natural.

I'm still in for spending the year off from coding but the possibility of a little surprise releases is increasing.

Re: Nejerpez warriors shoot tree trunks at me Thanks to Ezhe's savegame, this is now found and fixed.

When having ran out of arrows, in some conditions NPCs still decided to keep wielding their bow.
And as they now kept shooting their bows the actual arrows were replaced with quite random items.

Fixed - persists in 3.72-patch #2

Re: tree trunk spawns in inventory after fishing Yay! With the help of the savegame provided by Kreivos this issue is now found and fixed.
The bug was caused by unintended inventory re-ordering when the bait was all used up.
Even though this bug was noticed in relation to rod fishing the faulty mechanics may have caused some other rare item appearance oddities as well.
We are quite hopeful that the fix will address these issues too.

Fixed - persists in 3.72.2

Re: Find map location from message log? (008000):b2hf:[=]{0232031F}      | Your character has been saved.

Half of this number is how far south you are from the top of the map, and theother half of the number is how east you are, from the left edge of the map.

I cannot remember which is which, so what i do is i look at the last line of msglog.txt to find out where i am, and then i go a step south (on the world map) and drink a sip of water so that there will be a new msg and see which number changed.

From there it is a matter of counting. Half of my number is 0232 and the other half is 031F, and maybe i left my things at 02400400, so i will need to go southeast -- either mostly south and a tiny bit east, or mostly east and a tiny bit south. the counting is in hexadecimal so 232, 233, 234, 235, 236, 237, 238, 239, 23A, 23B, 23C, 23D, 23E, 23F, 240 = 14 steps in that direction and 225 steps in the other direction.

Just keep taking sips of water or eating food now and then to check your progress and adjust your course.

Re: F1 help ought to cover smoking
The changes to smoking of food has made it quite a chore to perform, which is probably a reflection of the reality, but, more importantly, is quite impenetrable to players. There's really a need to explain both how much wood you need to use, how often you need to repeat the burning, as well as for how long you need to do it. None of these steps are intuitively obvious to people not familiar with smoking, and even those who are may well know how to use it as a means of cooking (for immediate/near term consumption) rather than a means of long term preservation.

Hear, hear. All the practical information of these can be found from the news.txt, but that's not the most friendly source - at least for beginners - during the gameplay.
We've now added SMOKING and FIREPLACE game encyclopedia entries, of which SMOKING is highlighted in the cookery menu Smoking option.
We aren't likely to give exact numbers of many firewoods to burn, but it's stated that to keep fire burning for 3-4 hours equals to proper heating, and for smoking a daily warming is preferred. This is largely copy & pasting the news.txt entries with few edits.

Re: F1 help ought to cover smoking Maybe as a compromise it could say "You can look at the fireplace with F3 to see how long the fire will burn"

Animal droppings - an indicator and a fertilizer The past days have been about poop code and poop tiles... as the many different animal droppings, i.e. feces, will appear into the unreal world.

So, what's coming up is that certain animals will start to leave visible droppings that can be found in the terrain.
We're adding droppings for the commonly noticeable and relevant animals; hare, fox, lynx, wolf, reindeer, elk, bear, and so on.
The droppings of different species look a bit different, and upon looking at them you will be told which animal's droppings it is - and also if it's a fresh one.
Some domestic animal droppings are being considered as well, but we'll have to experiment a bit more to see how/if to implement it.

What is to featured as well, and would be in favour with domestic animal droppings, is that the droppings can be also used as fertilizer on your fields.
It will be possible, but not necessary, as the slash-and-burn cultivation already includes fertilization with the ash from the burned wood.
However, we could see fertilizing with the animal droppings increasing the yields slightly.

Here's some screenshots with different kind of droppings indicating the animal presence at these areas.

These are future additions - not yet functional in the current version 3.72.2
