Birds of Prey: Nuisances or a Farmer's Best Friend? I've been kicking this around for a while, ever since I had a resident goshawk a few games back, so has anyone else had the positive experience of local predatory birds keeping your fields safe?

Mine made my dogs insane trying to steal their food every 20 minutes, thus making me insane, and the interruptions to every single task were not appreciated. However, I did remove all of my bird-kill traps around my cabin in (somewhat irritated) reverence for what is surely a well regarded animal spritually. As a kind of thanks/lucky AI, over the rest of that summer and fall, I would find mutilated, half eaten carcasses of everything small and unfriendly to fields, from rabbits to mallard ducks, never saw another wayward badger, and had every single plant of my glorious little hemp field survive to harvest. Wasn't my dogs, cause they never noticed anything but the damn bird, were tied up far from the carcasses, and they didn't help much on my guys that didn't get a hawk guardian anyway.

So maybe worth leaving some food out to attract a goshawk if you want to be a farmer. Might have just been me, but this was worthwhile organic pest control. I feed my dogs a mash of various uncooked small animal meats, and they/hawk didn't seem to prefer anything. Next time I want a bird I'll skip the dogs all together though, and if you could find bird of prey eggs and hatch them in a later update I would lose my mind.

Video greetings - some for the supporters, some for everyone It's been a while since last video greetings, but now there's fresh greetings from horseback available for donors and supporters.
As usual, lifetimers can find the video at dedicated forum section, donors who place a donation of any sum will get to see it, and Steam purchasers can find it in the video greetings DLC.

...aand the previous epic winter video greetings is now available for everyone to see here at Enormous Elk YouTube channel.

Otherwise, I'm continuing my vacation and real life adventures for the rest of the august.
Cheers!

The underdog of weapons: the short sword Since Sami has been tweaking weapon values for the next release, I think it's important to discuss how this poor little weapon, the short sword, can be valorised.

Right now:

  • Handaxe is beaten ONLY by the battlesword in all three damage categories. I love handaxes dearly, but they are OP when compared to swords (and, IMHO, other axes as well)
  • Short sword has the same point damage of bastard sword and battlesword, where it should shine, and is beaten by all other swords in cut damage (fair). It also has the worst bonuses in the sword category. And even more weird: it's worse at stabbing than the Handaxe!
  • Three knives have more point damage than the short sword, and other three knives have exactly the same point damage, while all six of these are MUCH lighter. Also three of these knives have the same attack/defence bonus compared to the short sword
So, briefly, the short sword sucks. Which in itself is not a huge deal (of course some weapons are going to suck) but coupled with the fact that it's crazy expensive, it becomes a "useless weapon", so to speak.

My proposal would be:

  • nerf Handaxes slightly: 3-5-4 is probably more than fair for a tool that is in everyone's inventory. Perfect if associated with a shield.
  • up point damage of short swords slightly: 5 instead of 4. This makes it the best stabbing sword, on par with the three best knives

If you are asking yourself whether giving 5 point damage to short swords is unfair to the three best knives, I would argue that:

- all of those three knives are MUCH lighter and cheaper (which is the point of using a knife). Also if I'm not mistaken, light weapons should consume less fatigue when fighting
- they can double as tools, whereby the shortsword is a pure weapon

The only knife that I think gets the short end of the stick is the Skramasaksi, which is supposed to be a Seax, thus essentially a short sword. I have a small suggestion for this, too:

- instead of having damage 2-3-4, make it 2-4-4. That is, exactly equal to the current short sword but slighly worse than my suggested shortsword (but lighter!).

Late Night Encounter Paimen Sartolainen couldn't ignore the spirits prompting anymore.  He had spent 2 summers mostly near his settlement hunting, minding his growing flock of sheep, farming his fields, and tending his snares, traps, and trap fences.  He certainly wasn't a warrior, but had become a master at hunting (stealth and bow) and a grandmaster working with hides.  So, when the spirits told him to seek furs at the Kaumo, he couldn't put off the impression anymore...

Re: Late Night Encounter ...
So he packed up his gear, bundled in furs, loaded his 2 bulls, and set out once the lakes froze hard.  He was going to winter in the unexplored Kaumo and trap and hunt until the spirits were pacified.  After several days of slow skiing across the land, he was exhaused one morning after travel through the night.  So he wrapped himself in furs and slept well until he awoke refreshed late one night.  After only a short time traveling, he stumbled across a band of foreigners.  Normally, he had traded with these visitors in the past, but these new ones were strangers.  Even more, he had little to trade.  But, the foreigners were loaded with goods and seemed unaware of Paimen as he stumbled out of the forest near their camp.

It was then that the guardian spirits showed Paimen that these foreigners were evil.  Paimen knew he had to remove them from the forest and take their goods for the good of the land.  Paimen knew he had no hope to fight these traders, but he could stalk them like filthy foreigners they were.  So with his bow and with his spear, Paimen stalked them through the trees and killed them one at a time...

Re: Late Night Encounter ...There was too much to carry or load on his bulls with all his other provisions.  So Paimen shredded their clothes to cords and bandages and set back into the unknown wilderness toward Kaumo.

Later that same day, Paimen realized he misintrepreted the spirits and gave great offense.  He started to sneeze and was cursed with the influenza.  It worsened for 2 days until he stumbled into a Kiesse village who thankfully had a sage.  After resting for 2 more days in that village, and frequent interventions by the sage on his behalf, Paimen was able to appease the local spirits and was healed.  He traded some of the foreigner's goods for some pots and a masterfully made handaxe in that village.  Rested, rejuvinated, and equipped, Paimen then headed east into the unexplored region of the Kaumo in search of furs.
