Spears are better than swords - video Always associated spear with primitive weapon and sword with more advanced.
However newer doesn't always means better.

Good analysis on this video.

[3.60 beta-hotfix 2] NPC hunting - attacks my pet stag, lets me eat his meat Today I got to see an NPC hunting! I gave him a roach because i wanted him to cook it, and then I followed him around to see what he would do. There was a bear in the area that he was tracking. His dog stayed closer to me than to him while he was trailing than bear -- it may have been better for the dog to stay closer to his adventurer but maybe the dog judged i might be the bigger threat or maybe the NPC didnt want him rushing ahead and getting killed by the bear. Once the NPC got aggressive, the dog came running to help with the fight and together they took down the bear. The NPC skinned the bear and cut it for meat. He kept 76 meat cuts in his inventory and left the rest of the meat, the skull, and the bones on the ground. Then he lit 3 fires to roast the meat. He didn't mind when I picked up the skull, took out the teeth, hung it on a nearby pine (it would be a neat touch for the NPC to hang the skull himself). I hung around for a while, his dog ate some of the meat on the ground. He also didn't mind when I took the rest of his meat cuts -- this might not be a bug, because it was more than he could carry so I guess he didn't want it.

I saw in news.txt that tanning the hide isn't implemented yet.

In all this excitement I forgot to check whether he roasted that roach i gave him at the start, but I'll go back and find him again soon but I got the punt quest at the village I took the bear meat to so it'll be a little while to I can track him down.

Re: [3.60 beta-hotfix 2] NPC hunting - attacks my pet stag, lets me eat his meat Update! I caught up with him again. He's been busy. here he is skinning and butchering a forest reindeer. He doesn't have the roach anymore, maybe he ate it.

I tried to talk to him because i wanted to ask him about his skills, since i saw he got a harsh hide this time, but before i could do that he suddenly got aggressive: he'd found something new to hunt: My pet reindeer stag. At this point I'm going to save the game in case you want to look at it.

Re: Anyone ever clear out Njerp territory? I've only managed clearing out about half the Njerp territory before I have so much wealth that it's no longer worth it to me to keep playing the character. Mostly, I'd live off the spoils while my wounds healed and then whittle another settlement down until it was manageable to go in and clear those remaining in one fell swoop since I could never persuade a companion (other than my livestock and dogs) to accompany me when I really needed them. With my last attempt at this, I was razing villages and using the building materials to set up my own city that was centrally located.

This time around, I'm just playing a farmer/fisherman/gatherer and dealing with wandering warriors as they turn up. It's actually more fun this way since I have to plan ahead and get by on the meager resources at hand. I think my little dog might be getting tired of eating lake-reed flatbread, though. He doesn't complain, but there's a certain look in his eye.  :D

I've also found that in homesteading I tend not need weight to carry or lower penalties so some of the Nerj encounters are actually more concerning. Normally I can dash off to home to battle equip. Some players keep their gear on all the time though for realism its not so easy to sleep in armor. I've napped in my SCA medieval steel battle armor, without the helm on, and while okay-ish for a nap its wierd and pinchy when you are horizontal not vertical for so long.

Re: Wild animals suiciding on melting ice? The mechanism and possibility of animals falling through thin ice is not a bug, but a tasty feature.
From the news (and stories) we hear in Finland, it's quite common for elks to fall though thin ice.

This is news image from few years back, where five bull elks had fallen into ice.

Elks have great trouble getting back on the ice they fall through, and that's why it's often fatal for them.

Naturally this can happen to smaller critters as well. Think of dogs, for example. Given all the wits they have, thin ice isn't something they can't reason all too well - especially if running after a hare.

In my opinion animals drowning in thin ice is not too common in the game, although it's tricky to say as we often hear only a few case examples.
