Re: sacrificing dried fish pleases the forest, not the water Hmm. What can I say, except that after some considerations I don't find anything to fix at this point. Sacrifices are something that we don't have a definite rulebook to rely on, and actually trying to comprehend old finnish mythology ie. sacrifices often leaves me with a questions like "How come it's good to sacrifice that in this situation? I'm confused." :)

What I can say, though, is that freshness of the sacrifice is relevant in some cases - and in case of fishing sacrifices, that is pretty much a must. (Like speculated)

So in this case the bug is the "you feel comfortable" message after sacrificing roast meat followed by "you feel unsteady" message after sacrificing raw meat.

I can't pinpoint a bug here either, although the exact order of the events is unknown.
To mix you guys up even more I can also reveal that roasted meat can be a good and solid sacrifice sometimes, and if the (forest) spirit at the location felt you were in debt it could be happily accepted.

Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World? I'm back to URW for the past couple of weeks, after having taken a hiatus of more than a year. I'm currently weighing up moving my home base, even after having built a small cabin (my smoking house). I'm currently on a four tile island, with my home site in one corner and a farming site on another corner, both with ice-free access year round, while also not being accessible over ice from the mainland. That's my preferred kind of home site. There's another site half-a-day away which is three small islands with ice-free access next to each other, and I may move there. Ideally I'd have two one-tile islands like that, one for my home site and one for my fields (smaller islands attract fewer animal visitors, and I don't want animal visitors to my fields), but that has proven elusive. Maybe I'll do some more scouting; there is still time before I need to commit to one home site for winter. Or I could try something I've never done, not only play a nomad over the winter but a nomad travelling by watercraft, which is likely to be really challenging but I'm not sure if it would be much fun (long-distance travelling by watercraft when most water is frozen over can be very tedious).

The trap fence I set up for the Advanced Adventures course is rather unsuccessful, with only two elk caught after about a month in action, and one of those was only caught after I chased an elk into the fence (a very successful strategy I highly recommend, and closer to how trap-fences were and are actually used). After the changes to animal spawning ~2 years ago, trap fences need more thought, and I rushed into this one even though I had misgivings about this site I built it anyway. That'll teach me. My other possible home-site is further away from this trap fence, so I'll probably just break it down (or just trigger the traps and abandon it) and maybe not build a new one. My main meat source is seal, and I get enough of them to not need any more meat. I've already stopped setting out my nets except when I specifically want fresh food.

I must admit one of the factors keeping me in my current home site is the fact that it is in an area called 'Sword Strait', and that's just cool  8)

Run Away Slave on Winter (lucky) Surrounded by Njerpet. E'llp ran away as fast as he can to the closest building, rained by arrows. Inside the building E'llp feels great fear, and ready to fight with his rough knife. heard sound of fighting. But nobody enter the building, what he heard only sound of fighting. Seems that there's an arrow hit the other Njerpet, and they're fighting each other. After some moment, it became quiet.

E'llp sneaking carefully, and stunned when he saw dozens of Njerpet Warriors lying dead. E'llp took the spear, bow and arrow, then observe his surrounding. He found only one warrior survive from the chaos. E'llp start to aim and shot the arrow. One and only badly wounded Njerpet instantly dead with one bullet.

E'llp picked up their equipments. Fell down the tree and make big fire, ready to cremate the unbelieveable warriors.

Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World? Well, three stupid deaths in (never ignore how cold winter gets folks), and I get this cheerful trap line scene.

Guess I won't have to worry about food for a long time! I'm busy using all the bones to make arrows and practice my archery -- running a modified version of BAC's self-sufficiency compilation, which suits me fine.

Once winter ends, I'll plant the little field I have set up, finish up my cabin, and I'm thinking of establishing a fishing camp to the far northwest of my current camp. Then, perhaps I'll do the advanced course just to force myself to move out of this comfortable Driik land.

Super Mario... Why can't the chracter or animals jump?

The character should be able to jump across small bodies of water (with a running start) in pursuit of prey, rather than going the long way round, to save time. Jumping would also help to avoid getting wet and cold.

Some of the smarter or stronger animals like lynxes should be able to jump across small bodies of water or certain traps. This would make hunting more challenging. Currently, you just need to chase prey into mires and you are almost guaranteed success because they don't jump across water. Something is wrong with how easy hunting is now.

If jumping is too difficult to code then nvm.

Weather and Sight I think if you spend your whole day outside, the weather could/should be a more important thing  8)
(and it would also be nice to add some relevance to the wetherlore skill)

In addition to those cool things already on the development list:

    Varying forms of snow
The amount and the form of snow having more impact on physical activities the character, NPCs and animals can do
Ability (and sometimes a need) to remove snow (by shoveling)
    Thunder and lightning
Storms; trees felling down, crops getting hurt etc.
Growing plants reacting to the weather and flourishing accordingly

what do you think about:

Fog, hindering your range of sight, down to just a few meters also during the day in extreme conditions
so for example there could be some foggy autumn weeks that make hunting really weather dependant

modelling the moon as influence on range of sight during the nigth (a full moon night in winter can feel bright as a day, just without colors)
this would be influenced by weather too.
i dont know if there was a spiritual connection to the full moon in finland, but i guess there was, like in most old cultures  :)

different levels of wind, that effect your temperature and you risk much faster freezing when going out on windy days in the winter
maybe it could also effect how close you can sneak up to a herd of reindeers, depending on direction of the wind

old men in villages beeing able to tell you more about the weather than your weatherloreskill, like early warnings from storms.

clothes getting wet, then getting heavy and lose warmth until they are dried by time or a fire

I dont know how the weather in Finland really is, as i am coming from the alps, so if there are misconceptions tell me please  ;)

PS: I love this game and appreciate every minute put in its developement  :D

Year 2018 now added to development history log Briefing of year 2018 is now summarized up at "Development history of UnReal World" section at the homepage.
Mostly about fixing and balancing it was. And little bit about cats and Guinness World Records.

You can take a look at the Dev.news since 1992 page here:

[Diary entry] Skiing and tracking I guess we haven't seen any lynx related dev's diary entries here at the new forums. The old forums surely had some. So, how about a little picture story from the real world adventures of unreal world developer - with a lynx involved.

I went skiing the other day, and the ski trip then turned into a tracking exercise. Soon after entering the forest I spotted some lynx tracks, but our paths then departed as I went about my own trails.

Later, when returning home, strange curly tracks caught my attention - and sparkled my tracking instinct. I guessed that this might be the same lynx now dragging its kill, and had to confirm the theory.

I scouted the area, found lots of hare tracks, and then the lynx tracks which eventually turned into sneaking tracks as it approached the location.

The hare's last dance with the lynx went to many directions until finally the place where it ended was found, with some hair and (not too old) bloodscape.

There, the lynx had dragged its kill to a more peaceful location for eating it. That was some twenty meters away, among thick young spruce trees. Not much was left of the hare, but a few hairy bits on the snow.

Afterwards, I had to search for my backpack for half an hour as I had left it somewhere on the snow in excitement. I enjoyed the day and I hope you enjoyed this first, but hopefully not the last lynx related diary entry at these new forums.

[Diary entry] Talks with PhD about folk beliefs in UnReal World The folklore, mythology and folk beliefs displayed in UnReal World have also arised academic interest.
Last weekend fresh Doctor of Philosophy, mr. Kyyrö, from Univerity of Turku School of History, Culture and Arts Studies paid a visit and came to talk about these themes for a project he is planning regarding computer games and religion.
Should there be some related publications or articles in the future, I'll keep you updated, but you gotta be patient as ambitious academic studies are proceeded slowly and carefully.
It's the same with ambitious iron-age inspired computer games too... :)
