When you sign up for the forum, you don't have to validate your email address to prove that you are the owner of your email address.

I found a setting for that, and changed it to require e-mail verification. I hope someone who registers after this change can confirm this works now.

EDIT:

Marquees are annoying (anything that moves is annoying) and should be removed.

Found that, too. It is now disabled, along with 'flash'.

Hmmm, so let's see!
Spoiler: show
I installed a mod for it, now I have SP-button in the bb-code toolbar, and here I'm testing if it does what we would like it to do!

EDIT3:

As Sami noted elsewhere, the like feature doesn't work yet.

... aaand that seems to be fixed, too. Feel free to test around, everybody!

Hello world, hello forums Look at that! We do have new UnReal World forums now. Welcome!

We'll have a completely fresh start with these forums. Old post or users won't be migrated, but you may want (and are encouraged) to copy&paste your greatest/selected posts from the old forums. Now create an account, feel like at home and carry on posting and discussion as usual.
You can still find the old forums here.

Based on the community needs forum functionalities and boards will be expanded and tweaked along the way.
SMF engine is nicely moddable and hosting the forums of our own gives us all the control -- and zero ads.

Credits for forums background image edit goes to Simon "KillerFRIEND", and credits for early forum testing goes to bunch of trusted lifetime members.

We do have lifetime membership badges and section on these forums as well, and accounts lifetimers are upgraded with delay of few days from the registration.
If you are a lifetimer and don't seem to receive your badge, you may want to notify me by e-mail.  Do that especially if register on these forums with a completely different account.

We're quite busy with many different things, so don't expect quick replies to anything these days, but we'll try to keep the forum launch as smooth and painless as possible.
Things may still a bit under construction here and there, but the boards we've got here are familiar and playable already. :)

Now let's get these forums started. Be nice, be polite, and have fun with the power of the brave new boards. Speak, friend, and enter.

Re: Keeping the game fresh I always try to play a likeness of myself, and then basically roleplay as myself.  Basically, would you do something in the game that you wouldn't do in real life?

Basically...

- Are you really a god of combat, stealth, and a master hide-worker?  Specifically?
- Would you deliberately hunt down and kill somebody to take their stuff?
- For that matter, would you really seek out warriors from another culture to fight?
- Would you really gather a whole bunch of people from different villages, arm them with weapons and armor, and go destroy other camps?
- Would you really subsist on a mono-diet knowing how bad for you health that is in real life?  Like mono-dried meat or mono fish, or mono milk?
- For that matter, what kind of allergies do you have in the real world?
- Would you really feed your dogs spoilt meat?  Or try and sell that to others (not sure if you can still do this or not.)
- Would you really build a cabin, by yourself?  Would you really cut down 300 tree's, put them all on a raft secured only with small pieces of cloth you cut from your underwear, and paddle upstream, to a building site so close to the river that it could potentially be flooded?
- Would you really build a trap-fence 10 km long?
- Would you really work your character so hard that they are constantly on the verge of fainting?
- Use the "Oath of Iron" ritual on throwaway weapons?
- Ect, ect.  You get the point.

Basically there's a ton of things you end up doing in the game because they are incredibly favorable or they take out some of the tedium, but they totally wreck the intended balance of the game.  Now, of course, being to strict with those ideas can also lead to a boring or frustrating game, so you should have some leeway if you choose to re-imagine yourself.  Perhaps you from 1,000 years ago would be very talented in something.  You would have to be, or you wouldn't last very long.

Bakinho's short story     They left him in the village entrance. The large group had lost its youngest member. And in the end, it was his own choice.
Bakinho said good-bye and took a look over the place - A light rain falling constantly. An old man, sitting in a cabbin's door, watched into the boy's eyes: "Life is rough - they seemed to express - but you don't know about that yet".
He didn't enter and went ahead with his lonely trip, seeking for a water source and getting into the unknown. It was not until he found a tiny lake, that the rain stopped. A new page in his life's book was up to be written, this new chapter living by his own.

His first days were so hard. He knew plenty skills, in their mind and body, but his soul seemed to have sleept away: that burning flame in it was almost extinguished. He couldn't build a fire, fall a tree, get food. He had forgotten everything...

--------------------------

-Hi, my name is Bakinho. I am starving - I said with a tear rolling down my cheek. And a tiny, streched stomach.
-Hello, Stranger, we don't know who you are - Answered the old man.
-I need something to eat - I begged.
-Pick up whatever you want, but pay for everything you pick - He stared at me.

I went out the village. What were they doing, taking care of their own beloved ones and property or beeing pitiless?

-----------------------

Those days were even roughers. But Bakinho managed to fish and fullfill his stomach by himself. Never getting enough food, although he could get over the starvation and its issues. He realized that those tiny wild 'fruits' were edible, that those tree leaves were a great wall to get away the weather elements so then sleep better. His spiritual flame was growing. And he was thankful to the Great Spirits for that.

----------------------

I am alone, I need to talk with someone. Is this what i think it is? And the village's people shown me their backs. Yeah, this is a fresh track! Some child, they are purer, they are more gentle. So you are going to the north, huh? It seems like a big creature. A child or maybe a good friend to be with me, to share even silence. I have to be very... careful... it saw me! Run!
...

---------------------

Tomorrow will be a better hunting day. Luckely i have fish for breakfast.

--------------------

Bakinho climbed up to the top of a hill, and watched the peaceful horizon. Two human shapes into the far. He went for the encounter, that was a great sign of providence, claiming that finally some fraternal warmth was near.

--------------------

-Hello, my name is Bakinho. I am hunting - I said with a smile in my face, to the tallest man there.
-Hi, friend o'mine. You seem like a great hunter! Just look at you! - He replied with a perfect smile.
-Well, i do what i can. I am improving, though. 'Cause i am young. Now i became a lonely man - I said, my chest got bigger and wider.
-You are! Look that staff, such a masterpiece. You'd fight three bears back in a row - His vivid eyes had a hidden secret. I heard two human laughing behind me.
-I... c-can te-teach you how to make one fo-for yourself - I began to fear.
-Don't lose your time, just handle me that spear and knife, then if i feel mercyful i'll let you go with your legs still sticked in your body.
I am screwed, i thought. The last thing i felt was a hard hit in my head.

------------------------

I woke up. The forest was strange, my inner, desolated. I was all broken and slowly i managed to recover. I understood i couldn't feed myself with those great fruits. I couldn't fish nor hunt.
I didn't find my way back either. After several days I found my shelter, and entered in the village, some hundred of meters away.

----------------------

-Hi, i am Bakinho. I really need your help, I...-
-Hello Stranger. What do you want? - She asked.
-I need to recover myself, i am not well - I was clearly bleeding.
-I am really sorry, i cannot help you -

-----------------------
Fury. Anger. Awoke a demon within. I hitted her in the head, she ran away screaming in pain. I catched her again and hitting, i knocked her down.
----------------------

He stayed in front of the unconcious body, breathing heavily, his mind drifting away. Some loud screaming were getting closer.

-There he is. I saw him, he is trying to kill her. Come everybody. He is trying to kill her!-

The old man hitted Bakinho's head with a club. Wasn't until there that he went back into reality. Bakinho fighted back, and really quickly understood he had failed. A second man arrived, with a knife. The two men were stabbing and hitting him. Bakinho just got lost into a dark new place, a new world.
----------------------

At the end this was a short trip. That thorax stab was deep! huh! And i just have to say... those hits in my head are crushing my skull... to the Great Spirit, how regreted i am.
Another stab...

--------------------

The coward young boy learnt from this life, and the soul's trip goes on. Now in another place, no more in this world. He learnt from mistakes and suffering, now he awaits a new oportunity to go beyond understanding.

(Migrated post. This section were quite blank. This was the first experience i had with the game some several months ago. I loved it. Regards)

Re: Keeping the game fresh i find starting up an industry to be satisfying and a good way to make the in-game days pass quickly and without tedium.  For this, I rely on mods.  Ironworking is my favorite, and weaving is also very fun.

One survival maxim is to improve your situation at least a little, every day.  With this mindset, you can usually think of something to do.  Why not expand your home, build an addition or a new shed to store things?  Dig a well, or gather the materials for a kota.  Create a large farm, with many animals, many plots of crops and a large herb garden.

One lifestyle I've never managed to actually get off the ground is travelling kota-dwelling nomad, using a reindeer (or 2 or 3) to carry my supplies and the materials for my kota, and travelling light with just my bow and a few dogs.  I think it would be pretty cool, but somehow my nomads always end up dying before i get to that point.

also, I want to mirror others in saying that I find UnReal world to be a very effective pastime for when I cannot get out in the real woods.  It really does an effective job in cultivating the exact "mindset" of real wilderness living.  In fact, sometimes even when I am in the woods, I play Unreal World when it's too rainy to do much outside!  my unreal world character really is like a "second me", a persona that I can use to explore options and life-paths that would be too difficult or dangerous to do in real life.  Of course, I would love it if I could make a 4 km trap fence and funnel all the life of the woods into my dinner-pot, but that is illegal pretty much everywhere  :P.  I tend to grow very attached to my Unreal World characters, and I am proud to watch them grow and thrive.  With this in mind, I generally try to treat them like real people, and ensure that they get enough sleep, enjoy some variation in their diet, and sometimes do things just for fun or to make their life more comfortable.  I find it makes the game much more satisfying to play.  I suppose some might find it odd that I lavish such care on a little pile of pixels and numbers, but this is my hobby, and I enjoy it. I also find that it has some level of cross-over to real life situations - when I've been playing unreal world as opposed to other games, I find my mind much more readily adapts to wilderness living.  I am able to plan out my actions intelligently by simply thinking, "Hm, what would I do in Unreal World?"

I'm not trying to say that Unreal World is adequate training for a survival situation, real life is far more complex and you also have to actually chop down all those trees yourself, not just watch a little animation!  but, when played mindfully, it can help your brain stay in the correct mentality.

Re: Kota spawned with 'Inside of a building' Ah, now I got it, kotas in the villages seem to get "inside of a building" tiles as their floor.
Must have been like that since introduction of village kotas. Well, this legacy issue is fixed now.

Fixed - persists in 3.40.

Re: using "reputation" as currency I agree that not having actual currency is a good thing, however I also agree that trying to come up with a balanced trade is often an unnecessary chore.  It could use QoL improvements.  "What of what I have do you want" usually ends up in them asking for your masterwork weapon.  Maybe a feature to ask, "How many of this stack of widgets would you want," or "Among these four different items what would you want"

Summery summary 2017 So, the new forums are up and running, some content popping up here and there - and all seems to be quite well at this new discussions settlement of ours. Nice!

Thought of posting a little summary about some upcoming new features, and when to expect them. This is something that's been probably originally posted at the old forums, but we'll hereby bring the completely new forum members on track as well.

So summer it is, and we've been steadily trucking towards yet another version. Once it's wrapped up it's gonna be summer holidays for me, and new features in UnReal World for you. Summer it is, despite of the current weather in Finland including little snow and sleet every now and then, chilly days and almost frosty nights. But the weather engine still isn't bugged ;) I'm hopeful that maybe in July we could have a new release out. Like always, we're adding new features on many different fronts but let's highlight some of the probably most widely interesting here:

* Bones and antlers

Antlers and bones can be now harvested from carcassess.
They have only little usage on their own but do serve as trophies and new raw materials to be utilized via modding if you like.

* Skulls and teeth

Skulls can be now harvested from a few species of dead animals whose skulls (or teeth) have meaningful ritual or magical usage. Skulls can be furthermore applied to pick teeth from them. Bear teeth for example are well-known for their magical powers.

Screenshot: By the sacred bear memorial rite tree Panu takes a look at the sturdy bones after hanging the bear skull in place.

* New spells, more spells, spells screen overhaul

We're giving up the old ritual system for good, and now focusing on the new kind of spells and spells system first showcased in version 3.40. This means removal of some of the old spells, but also featuring more and more new spells.

Ritual screen will be known as "Spells and magic means" screen and all the new spells are listed there as well. "New spells" refers to spells featured in version 3.40, which are learned within quests and performed by following the instructions given in spell description by using the common game mechanics and actions.

Currently you can view new spell descriptions only in the quest journal, but now it all will be available within the spells screen. Whenever a new spell is learned it will also appear in this new list of spells.

Bringing the selector on a any spell in the list displays its information dialog. If necessary, a selection is then made by mouse click or enter. In addition, there are also hotkeys for quick spell selection.
In case of the new manually and mechanically performed spells the spell selection merely shows the spell description and instructions to follow in order to perform the spell.
The old spells (eg. blood-stanching incantation) are colored differently and automatically put to action upon selection.

Screenshot: The new spells screen with quite a bit of spells known. Hovering the selector over the first spell shows the description.

* Cubs and calves - rise of the young animals

Cubs and calves have been added for relevant wild animal species eg. elks, bears, reindeer, hares etc.
In case of large species ie. elks and bears, the young ones usually follow their mothers in the wild for a full year after the birth. So, now you may occasionally encounter an elk mother wandering together with her calf, or a bear mother followed by her cub. Mother animals may act more unexpectedly or aggressively than usual when they're still taking care of their young ones -- and that's especially true in case of bears.

Few screenshots - the adventures of fghfg among cubs and calves :)
Bear mother with its cub. Careful now. You don't want to position yourself in between those two.

Ooo.. isn't that sweet... not a hunting day today.

* Ant nests

For some this is a mere curiosity, for some an absolute necessity. Anyhow, ant nests can be now found in the forest. They are needed in performing certain spells but have no other use to the player character currently.

Screenshot: It's raining - and it's ant nest!

And finally, something to highlight about upcoming Steam goodies...

UnReal World Steam Trading Cards

Trading Cards for UnReal World are coming this summer. Yet again we like to do things with deep thought, love, ambition and talent and that's why the card artwork is drawn by Finnish comic artist Tuuli Hypén. (Some of you may remember her classic "conflict in the woods" drawing based on the old title screen.)
We've cherished and talked about the card themes and plots during the spring, the creation is in progress, and below you can find a sneak preview collage consisting of drafts, sketches and semi-finished artwork.

Trading Cards are likely to be launched even before the actual next version is finished. We'll start with six cards, and most likely expand the pack in the future. Prepare yourselves, foreign and domestic card traders!

This is upcoming stuff, not yet featured in the current version 3.40

Re: Quest with close villages That's normal, not a bug. That dense groups of villages share the properties, be it good or quests.
