Re: Is it viable to use a pack of dogs for taking down Njerpez and robbers? Oh the glorious mutts how I love these you furry wonders. Dogs if used right are great for hunting, you just have to understand how they behave. Anything smaller than them, foxes lynx gluttons they will most likely try and kill. Large game though they generally Chase and tire out, making active hunt much easier. If you and your furball get separated I don't recommend zooming out, shelter in place, literally build a shelter and wait. I usually try and zoom out to see if I get the message are you sure? Dog will be left behind,  I get to know my pal is alive. As to combat the pack is deadly when they work together. First thing to do is hit the look key. Identify anyone with a bow, and sieze the initiative. If you chose a target, the Archer, BEFORE the dogs auto agro to protect you they will obey it first, even bypassing closer does. Use them to cover the distance and shut down archers freeing you to engage closer melee targets.

Re: Is it viable to use a pack of dogs for taking down Njerpez and robbers? On dealing with auto drop into wolves. You always start with your pets and companions to your east, and nobody agroed. Shift r to run always fight in run, your faster in run and thus more action, it more or less a free action switch between running and walking. then start to leash your dogs. I think wolves are some of the best modeled behaviors in the game. They are masters of hit and run, and if given a choice dislike a straight up toe to paw fight. Look around using the 9 key to flip 180 degrees, less actions to see the whole area. At this point if no wolf has attacked try to back away from the pack in what ever direction has the fewest furry gold mines, I mean death traps. Pick up any rocks and sticks that cross your path. At least in the last version I found that when hit by a throw rock or stick they will run away for a bit. Use that if one or more attacks you. Break their charge with a rock and keep backing away. Punches and kicks also seem to cause a "tactical retreat" reaction more than weapons do.

In short always try to maintain visual on the wolves get your dogs leashed and the goal is to get far enough away to zoom out so your objective in a fight is to get them to run, not to kill them all. That's what traps are for.

Re: Various questions from a new player Small pointy things, knives, absolutely help you get out of broken ice, I can't remember where but I've seen a post where Sami mentioned it. And ya like you I would have started a fire, dropped all my gear except for knives for less weight and crawled out to the wolf. On a side note I'm more like to risk it for a wolf over an elk. Generally once established I have a good food stock pile and I am more interested in high value pelts.

Re: Companion - does their help worth the food? I generally don't have companions assist me with felling trees. I have them fell the the trees while I either dress them into logs or move them into place next to the build site. Also as an active Hunter or successful trapper of large game I feel that once I dry or smoke I'm first elk or a couple of deer food is not generally an issue. I have more trouble getting hides proceed and and meat to market without it spoiling. So in my opinion meat is a cheep resource and companions are worth it.

Re: Village Women Trading Too! I hardly bother (L)ooking at anyone other than hunters and adventures, the other villagers rarely seem to offer goods. However it would be cool if people had occupation related items, Craftsmen with carving axes and knives, even better sages and old men with herbs for sale. Maybe somehow labeled if you buy them.

Re: Village Food Status and Charity (both ways) I agree. We know that they are charitable to NPCs ie wounded adventures. I think it would be very much in the spirit of the game for them to say I see your starving go collect fire wood and I'll give you supper.

Re: Village Women Trading Too!
I like things as they are. This is another slippery slope to introducing politics into UrW.

I hear you but by your rationale politics are already in the game. When was the last time you got a quest from a female Npc or saw a female hunter or found one will to travel with you? There is a balance between current societal norms and the norms of the game's historical fiction setting. I think big elk has struck that balance well. The PC can be male or female no plus or malus to gender, it a cosmetic difference. While the NPCs somewhat conform to the gender norms of the iron age north.

@JEB Davis your right they wouldn't be likely to be carrying them but I rather they do for balance of playability vrs realism tempered by what I would assume to be easier to code and use existing trade mechanics. But even better the addition Npc crafting and professions via Ask. Hello could you bake me some bread I'll trade you these two rabbits. Yes come back I half an hour. Could you carve me a special punt with the force of water. Bring me a long felled in the rain and come back in a month.

Alternative quest reward. So my character received a find herbs, burdock, for old man quest. My herb lores not great and I don't recognize it. This got me thinking. If I was actually there I would ask what burdock looked like where it likes to grow? So I suggest the following. On gather herb quest the old men should also say something like it grows in fields or it likes river banks. I don't want a quest area circle just terrain preference. Second I think they " show" you what it looks like so you at least have a 1 out of 2 or 3 chance of recognizing out it in the field. And third if you succeed in the quest the old man teaches one or more properties of the plant. I would rather receive that knowledge than the traditional reward. Maybe a dialogue choice of do you know about this herb? Ok then let me tell you about it or oh you already are familiar this the uses of this herb then take this reward.

Re: Alternative quest reward. I don't spend a lot of time gather herbs so alot of time when that quest comes up I'm not sure which herbs I can even identify yet.

Your word is law but for the sake of friendly debate, I hear the quest as a need for young legs it's a task for an apprentice or novice. If they were wanting to test your herb lore then they should give an ailment like I've have a fever or cough, maybe trouble sleeping and they ask for herbs to help and thus you must be able to identify the properties of a plant to know what to give. But that would be an entirely different quest all together.

I just wish there were ways to learn from my elders
