Re: Axes and hatchets Ah, I see.  I think the vesuri, we would probably call a "bill-hook machete".

I work clearing trails in a National Park and have worked in similar forestry-related fields for a long time so I find these types of woodsman tools quite interesting.

Re: Flooding
I think just in general it would be nice to add not only this, but things to make water slightly more dangerous. Possibility of slipping and falling off raft etc. I can only imagine how hard to code it would be.
i would like to see this too, it seems a little odd that my homemade raft handles just fine in ice-cold rapids with my Inferior paddle to steer it.  But I think this is already in the development goals.

Re: The situation and stuff The game has often served as a breath of fresh air for me, and I'm sure it will continue to do so for others throughout this troublesome period and beyond.  Hope the isolation is treating you & all the community well.

Re: Improvements to fire mechanics, changes to smoking mechanics Wow, this is amazing!

One more question... If we leave meats to smoke in a village, will it be assumed that villagers will continue to periodically light the fire?  Is the game able to track this sort of activity, even if the player is far away?  Or, must the player be continually present to smoke his own meat?

Re: Does BAC reduce realism? Personally I think it greatly improves the game, but yes maybe it is a little unrealistic that a 16 year old person would know how to do everything from building looms, knitting, making nets, smelting bog iron, building boats... Still, not impossible if you play someone with high intelligence.  Most people in the UnReal World would probably have at least seen or heard of most of these processes (depending on their cultural background).

As others have said, you always have the option of ignoring those parts of the mod.  You can even just go into the mod files and delete whichever parts don't suit you - or strike them out so that you can bring them back in later if you choose.

I always encourage everyone who have quibbles with mods, to learn the modding infrastructure for the game, if you don't already know it, because it's actually incredibly intuitive and simple.  I am not a computer expert by any means, but I find it very easy to manipulate, tweak and combine mods in this game.  You could even create your own sub-mod which you feel better represents reality, and release it to the community.

Re: Improvements to fire mechanics, changes to smoking mechanics I've used tarp smokers before in the past and they work great.  Not hard at all to set up, and the jerky comes out great.  As long you smoke it thoroughly, it really doesn't need to be eaten straight out of the smoker either.  It will basically be regular jerky such as you would buy in the store.  It will keep for several days, probably longer in dry conditions.

I was always sort of surprised you couldn't do this in the game.  You have to build a whole log cabin just to smoke meat, rather than just some animal skins draped over a tripod.  I always figured maybe it was a historical cultural thing, or maybe for gameplay balance.

Re: Why I carry a rock in real life
I cheat. I carry a knife. Usually a small folding knife (3” or 7-8cm blade)
Sometimes just a tiny 1.5-2” 3.5-5cm folding knife.
Other times it’s a small fixed blade knife and other times medium sized knife (4” 10cm blade)

And for backwoods camping and large game hunting, I also carry an axe.
Same here.  I never leave the house without my Leatherman multitool.  Then I have a KABAR that I take if I'm going camping, and also a Gransfors Bruks.

I do enjoy collecting rocks though.  I'm especially interested in metals

Re: Crowdfunding : your thoughts? I have faith in the Enormous Elk team, no matter what.  For the paltry sum of a lifetime membership many years ago, I have been rewarded with countless hours of entertainment.  I know whatever project they begin, Sami and Erkka will approach it with the same care and dedication that they put into UnReal World.  Therefore I will be happy to support any new venture.

Re: Seal hunting tactics I have successfully hunted seal, but it took much patience and just as much luck.

It is true what you say - the seals will definitely "haunt" a certain area, usually a skerry.

I have had success with deadfall traps, although it seems quite random, you would need to build a lot in order to meet with predictable success.  Your best bet is probably to load the materials into your boat, unload them onto the skerry, then build the trap there.

I have also had limited success with "ambush tactics".  To succeed, you need a character with high stealth, speed, and accuracy with chosen weapon.  I found it useful to crouch in a natural low spot, like a little trench, or behind a rock.  The seals will sometimes come relatively far inland, to where they cannot easily escape back to sea.  Wear as little clothing as possible, and carry a spear (or other weapon) in both hands, then you have to wait for the seal to get to that point and get close to your position.  At the right moment, you spring out, sprint towards the seal, try to cut off its access to the water, and throw one or both spears.  One spear will almost never kill the seal - their blubber seems to be very thick, as they can take quite a lot of damage.  You may need to hit an individual seal with multiple spears before it even begins to slow down.

However, once it has several harpoons sticking out of it, it will start to slow.  Wait for it to come ashore again, then rush it with a club (or blunt side of an axe, etc) and start beating it.  Aiming for the legs/flippers seems to be a good way to keep it from getting away, then once it's mostly immobilized you can attack the skull.

Due to the damage to the hide from the spears, this usually results in a carcass that is "harmed" or worse.  But it can be done.  Also, the spears will commonly fall out in the water, or else the animal might die out there as well.  So you need a boat to collect your spears and the body.
