Re: Immersion text when being idle/resting
A simple immersion addition where, when you idle/rest, a small randomly generated text detailes what you do. For example:

"You watch the sun *glistening* in the *lake*"
..
Etc. etc.

This would be quite nice and easy addition, although it should be somewhat reasoned in which cases random immersion texts would be shown - in order not to break the immersion.
For example, when player character would be hiding and idling, waiting for a long-awaited game animal to approach, "you catch snowflakes" or "spend time with your *animal*" wouldn't fit too well.

People, feel free to add your kind of immersion texts in this thread and we'll see what comes from it.

Re: But that villager died I'm afraid time won't heal the villagers feelings in regards to non-returning companions, but this is not a bug either, it's just a way it is, and I'll move the thread at suggestions.

Adding mechanisms to tell the NPCs what really happened is tricky, and still even if the companions would die fairly I don't know if villagers still should always be like "He died when hunting with you? Ok, we don't mind that, here have a another hunting assistant, we wish him better luck than the previous. Hehe."   :D

This is something to tweak/ponder in the future, but there's not an easy way to find a good consensus.

Re: Are forest reindeer supposed to be afraid of escaping into water? It's been mentioned in changelog of version 3.19:

 - added: aggressive/escaping animals and NPCs can wade through shallow water

...which is only reference I quickly found regarding this situation. However, checking out the code it seems like escaping animals are not allowed to escape into the water, even if its shallow - like at marshes. So a feature, or its intention, has been misplaced or mystically disappeared somewhere along the line.
This might be because direct allowance of animals escaping into shallow water would make them not to weight the options, as dry land if available would be always safer.
For the feature to return, I need to add some consideration about when the situation is desperate enough for the animals to choose their route through the water.

Who let the dogs out... Let's try to make a return with development news then. It's taken some browsing of the code and decoding hazy written notes to find the path which I was following prior to fracturing my arm, and the sick leave that followed. But now also my to-do memory has recovered to great extent and there are snippets of upcoming features to present.

Dogs... NPC dogs... Village dogs... Dogs to better protect the NPCs... that's what I had started to code, and that's what is now to be continued.

Village dogs are now released out of their pens, and they roam freely at the village area. This allows village dogs to truly protect the village from possible threats and intruders. Village dogs are also improved in their watch dog behavior, and unfamiliar visitors are now greeted with alarm barks and by coming close by to sniff and check them. Village dogs may seem intimidating for strangers but this behavior is gradually toned down when you become more familiar with the village.

...to be continued -- there are a few more dog things coming up..

Re: Dog releases itself? This is a bug. And I believe it's been remedied few times down the road, but not all the instances where it happens have been found out. It is rare thing, and for that reason a super hard to fix, as there hasn't been a single instance to reliable reproduce it. I believe it may have something to do with how the area is entered or left when character goes exploring and returns. All kind of details, or savegames where reproducing it could be tried, are welcome.

Who let the dogs into the wild... Dog related additions now continue with dog companions for wandering NPCs.

Wandering woodsmen and adventurers you may encounter in the wild can now occasionally have dog companions with them. And just like the dogs owned by player characters these will also protect their masters.

These are future features, not yet functional in current version 3.52.

Re: Who let the dogs into the wild...
Nice. What happens when you hire those characters? Do you get the dog's abilities as a bonus, and, if so, to what extent (ordering it around, getting it to carry items, etc.)?

It would be a shame if dog ownership prevented characters from being hired.

In my tests none of the dog owners met in the wild agreed to be hired. This could be because they don't want get into trouble with their precious pets, or because they don't want to lend their pets to anybody to any extent, or because it's prevented due to resulting spin-off features being far too costly to implement in the midst of other priorities.  ::)

New video greeting for supporters & lifetimers After a little hiatus with video works there's now a fresh video greeting available for those who choose to do donate, and naturally lifetime members can find it at the designated forums section.

It must be noted that during the last few years donations have dried out to great extent, whereas downloads of the free-of-charge (ie. donation-based) version have constantly kept increasing. This occasionally makes me wonder about reasonableness of continuing my share of donation-based model, including the video rewards. But nevertheless, the fresh video work is now there. The game is there. And we continue to offer you a freedom of choice to support or not.

Cheers!

Re: regular crash to desktop
After a marathon of 14 hours playing I got another ctd. Looking at the debug logs there was not anything standout as an error in urw, apart from the odd mix of Norwegian and English in most entries.  ;)

If there's Norwegian something is terribly wrong..  ;) See, it should be mix of Finnish and English.

The logs were by this time several hundred Mb, not practical for me to post with my 3rd world internet. I does however seem to be a system fault with my Linux, I will carry on testing after investigating my sdl setup.

Okay, even though this kind of repeating text stuff gets compressed with amazing ratio. Good luck with your investigations. SDL site also hosts bugzilla, where you may also find Arch reports, and possible solutions also:

Development list
Last updated: Mar-13-2017

Yeah, it needs a touch. The list was first introduced to give green light for frequently asked bigger goals - and to indicate exclusion of some frequent non-suitable suggestions - but keeping it up to date has always been troublesome. Most of the version updates have lately dealt with non-listed additions, and thoroughly pondered roadmap towards finished game has never been a development plan ;)

I'll try to remember to take a look at it in the near future.
