Rendezvous for Foreign Traders I think it would be great if there were an annual rendezvous of foreign traders somewhere so the PC is not limited to only randomly occurring encounters. French traders did something similar when trading for buffalo and beaver furs in the US. One might even be able to order something for the next rendezvous from the traders. I've never really accepted that there are groups of traders wandering the forests of Finland without an established circuit through the villages.

I swear by shutters! For the first time ever, I was attacked by robbers at my cabin! Fortunately, on a whim I had built every wall with shutters, so, I actually saw these coming on the other side of my fence (I had built no traps!).

I rushed to my weapon stash (I was inside my cabin) and grabbed a lot of Fine Broadheads and ran back to the shutter. I managed to put 3 of them on the ground, though they were not dead yet. Then, I heard a door opening behind me! lol... I fired two more arrows and had to switch to my spear. My previous arrow work had badly injured the two inside and I finished them with my spear. Then I went outside and killed another lying on the ground. Circling the cabin, I found the last one and got a kill with a thrown javelin. I assume that there were only 4 because that's all I found.

What a great adventure! I have to ask, though, would my cabin have been robbed if I had not been home then?

Re: Can you equip companions with different weapons? I wonder, too, if the weight limitation of the NPC, whose stats we are in the dark about, may have an effect on which weapon and/or armor they choose to use?

For instance, how great a malus will the NPC accept if his burden exceeds his strength? Will he ever choose to wield a weapon with which he has little skill over one with which he is a master?

I was once told that NPCs never use javelins. Is that the only weapon they disregard? What is their preference for armor? Metal, fur, leather?

Such mysteries rob me of sleep in the night... that and the occasional rustle.

Re: Craft question Wow! The villages have been replenished with goods! And, I finally found a Masterwork Broadknife! To top it off, I also, finally, got a Foreign trader with a Masterwork Mace to offer it in trade. That is used for the final step in my hideworking, softening the hide. I guess it's time to pull those cured hides out.

Re: Improved trading system There already exists in the game a mechanism that provides a pretty accurate system of valuation- that used by the Foreign Traders!

It is made very clear what they believe is a fair trade, i.e., 'x' number of those furs and 'y' number of those furs. If you've traded much with them, you'll also have noted their valuation sometimes is merely a starting point. That's because your available furs are insufficient in value for the trade items you desire.

Anyway, I'd suggest, if it is possible, that the player has something like a 'trade blanket' (an inventory section) upon which he'd lay out all that he desires to offer for trade, from which VILLAGERS could determine what items they consider a fair trade. That would also put an end to villagers saying they'd be happy to trade for the Masterwork items I'm wearing/using, never gonna happen!

So, the 'Trade Blanket' would display, say, a dozen wooden bowls, ten paw-board traps, a few furs, some dried meat, jewelry, extra weapons, etc. Then, instead of the method described by the op of laboriously adding/subtracting items, the villager would give a quick initial valuation of the desired item.

Re: Precautions against accidental fire setting I'm baffled! Did you stack the bow with the arrows you used for a fire?

Re: Improved trading system
There already exists in the game a mechanism that provides a pretty accurate system of valuation- that used by the Foreign Traders!

If you've traded much with them, you'll also have noted their valuation sometimes is merely a starting point. What...? This is exactly the same system any other NPCs use too, except traders always want furs. So then you have values expressed in furs, great, but that doesn't change anything. Besides, when you ask the NPCs what they would accept they will tell you anything that would outweigh the value of the item, in the process they'll also choose things that are worth way more and thus highly inappropriate for the trade. Again, doesn't change anything about the problem.

So they would not choose masterwork quailty or other items that you want to keep any more, but other than that it would be exactly the same as it is now. Your "trading blanket" just happens to be your entire inventory and you can get the same effect you spoke of by simply dropping items you want to keep temporarily. Again, don't see the point.

The point being that the Foreign Trader mechanism already limits one's available trade items to a single field, that of hides, whereas the Villager's trade mechanism includes your entire inventory, NOT a single field. Lastly, my consideration of a 'trade blanket' would avoid the necessity of unequipping and/or dropping every quality item desired by the Villager, a clumsy make-do solution.

Re: Is there a topic that discusses trapping in the winter, particularly elk? Funny to note that SPOILED berries also serve as bait BUT are never eaten by the birds it lures into your traps!

Re: Advanced Combat When I hire a Companion, I first check their inventory for Bow/arrows. Then I try to trade with them and see if they'll let me trade for their arrows(they often will!) Then I check to see if they are interested in joining me. THEN, if they're a joiner, I trade for their arrows, thus removing the danger of them shooting a friendly. Btw, IF you buy their arrows (I pay around 50 cuts for 15 arrows) they'll readily join you when you ask them, as though you've resolved their lack of food.

As for their gear, they'll usually wear some FUR items they are given but they probably are not capable of wearing a heavy load of gear(because their strength stat is not high enough) without penalty so they frequently won't wear the superior armor I can give them. It might help if you TAKE from them unneeded things like javelins, hard staffs, ropes, torches, etc, to lessen their penalty.
