I mean no offense Erkka, but I always thought that using real names for tribes in URW would've been much better choice. I understand why you guys chose to go the way you did, but still... People tend to forget history and educating the world, even in a game environment, is absolutely a good thing. We have enough (perhaps too much) fantastical goblins in our lives, while our own true history and folklore are being either forgotten, or twisted to the point of being completely unrecognizable. So for what's it worth - thank you for telling us a bit about history of your ancestors. I always thought that real historical evens can be (and often were) much more dramatic and fascinating than any sci-fi or fantasy story. We need more of that.

Heh, sure. I doubt that they'll tell me anything super secret since my own drying went rather well almost every time, but sure, I'll ask and see if any of them might remember something interesting.

Well... I gotta thank you for putting me up to this. If nothing else, its been a few very interesting days, full of remembering a LOT of things and connecting with some folks I havent talked in quite some time:) All in all, I did learn the recipe and the way the meat was stored long term. Here is goes: Beat up and roll out the strips of completely fat and any membrane free meat into 2.5-3 finger's wide strips and make them as thin as possible. Try not to rip them too much - the stuff gotta be placed as flat as possible on as wide as possible area. The best meats are those that are quite lean to begin with - chiken, beef, rabbit etc. Pork is not advisable. Perfectly doable, but you really gotta know what you are doing, otherwise it may not be safe. So far nothing new to what I said earlier. One interesting thing that was mentioned several times is this - if grandma wasnt too sure about the weather's conditions, she used to soak a woolen mitten and place it in the morning on the rack. If it was completely dry by supper, the weather was good enough for drying meat. The interesting part is how they stored it. Once the meat was dried (strips are completely dry, snap and crumble in your hand like a potato chips would), they'd crumble the strips into a fingernail size flakes, pack them into clay jars (something like this one - http://kod-ua.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/%D0%93%D0%9B%D0%95%D0%A7%D0%98%D0%9A-3-%D0%BB%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B0.jpg), leaving about two finger's space in on top of the jar. The empty space would be filled with dry hay, usually from rye, then sealed with about a finger's thick layer of tallow, covered with a cloth cap and then closed with the jar's lid. Aparently, this way the meat would sit in the earthen cellar as long as you'd like, but no one really remembered it being there for longer than about half a year. Probably would be ok longer, but everyone agreed that by mid spring, the meat that was prepared in the summer was gone, or just about gone. February 24, 2021, 07:56:32 AM |

Tree sap/syrup in spring?
Just wondering if you guys do this kind of thing in Finland? It used to be quite a bit deal back in the days since its possible to collect spring sap from almost any fruit bearing tree, maple, walnut or even birch and boil it down to a thick, sweet syrup that has a very good shell life. Given the fact that sugar in general was quite pricey and very scares resource, methinks that springsap gathering would be something most of people wouldnt miss if it could be helped.

Be ready
To all my dear friends in Finland - be ready. Rabid orc is on the loose and you guys are not part of NATO. Threats are being made again and I am sure some of you are taking them seriously, but please be ready. Yes, we are bleeding rabid orc. Yes, Ukraine WILL stand, but there are quite a lot of them and they have been amassing weapons for last 30+ years. I know that its rather low possibility that the hordes will attack you at this moment, but its not impossible. Be ready. Another cruel and bloody year goes by and still we stand, so I might as well keep the post going. Its funny... Sometimes priorities change so dramatically that its completely unpredictable. if someone told me that my major life goal would be to visit a family cemetery and be able to pay my respects to those who went before me, I probably wouldnt conciser that person fully sane. And yet here we are... Learn from our mistakes good people of the world. Learn and never, ever let your guard down. Dont let yourself get complacent, this world is full of evil. Be always ready to defend your home and your loved ones. You can always buy new things, new stuff... But if you lose a relative, the only place to visit him or her would be a family cemetery. Indeed, JP_Finn, I guess if one sticks around a forum for long enough, some personal info will be known out there  Born, raised and schooled in Ukraine, family moved to Toronto in 1996 and I've been actively living and working in both countries from late 2000s or thereabouts.

UFL as part of UGF, a medevac driver. Released after getting wounded and becoming unfit for duty. I'll keep my personal info quite vague - the city I live in has a large orcish population and I'd rather not wake up to find my house burning. Oh it is a full scale invasion. If you recall what happened in 2022 you'll have your answer, you can still find those maps from 2022. In short, they tried to attack from ever side and got their arses handed over to them. Lost a crazy amount of equipment and considerable numbers of boots, most of the territory they managed to grab during initial push, regrouped, started mobilization to replenish their losses, refocused and resumed the invasion with everything they got, except for the nukes. I know its not my place, but I'll say it nonetheless: Milosevic had to be stopped. I agree that they way it was done was very far from ideal, but he had to be stopped. Regardless whether you want it or not, you have my respect for standing up for what you thought was right. I sincerely hope you'll find your peace with your past. I dont think we'll know what kind of resistance/partisan activities are there for as long as this war is going on. Keep in mind that eastern Ukraine is mostly as flat as a table, with very few places to hide, so the usual "hit and run" tactics would be virtually useless there. Plus modern day warfare is not really partisan-friendly. So pretty much only thing a partisan can do is sabotage and there is PLENTY of that. That being said, there is always something blowing up and orcish COs are being made into good russians on very regular basis. And that is what we know only from mass media or enraged local orcs themselves. How much of it is assisted, coordinated or even done by resistance we wouldnt know now (and maybe even ever) and I think that is how it should be. Still, you can look up marches in Kherson right after it was occupied with thousands upon thousands protesting against the invasion. No Bert Preast, you are badly misinformed. Orcs regularly use their strategic bombers to lob missiles at our cities and that is the main reason why their destruction was so widely celebrated in Ukraine. Every single one of those flyers destroyed = less civilian infra destroyed, less civilians dead and less misery all around. Huilo tried to use mass conscripts in Autumn of 2022, only to have over 2 mils of his own potential cannon fodder flee the country in about three months. After that, he said that conscripting is over and they started recruiting mercenaries from all over the world and dishing out a rather large sums of money to potential killers. Moreover, they emptied prisons, labour camps and began very aggressive recruiting campaign internally. So the bottom line would be again "they would've if they could've", but last attempt at mass conscripting showed it will simply not work well and while it will produce some conscripts, it will deplete their labour force within 6-8 months to the point of their economy not being able to support itself. Even without mass conscripting, their labour force is struggling badly and a LOT of blue collar jobs are left unmanned simply because those who used to do them either died off due to old age or ditched it and signed up to be a mercenary. Again, you are misinformed. Meat waves were re-invented in Bakhmut by Prigozhin and orcs have been using this tactic ever since. Yes, they use smaller groups due to drones, but those groups go forward pretty much non-stop and can not, I repeat, they CAN NOT go back. If they do, they are either shot by other orcs on the spot or given over to military police to be (sometimes publicly) tortured and humiliated before being sent ahead again. That is why we have a lot of POWs who quite deliberately abandoned their groups/posts and surrendered to UGF solders. As far as I know, there are so damn many of those, we even have formed at least 3 full fledged battalions out of those guys and they are kicking some serious ass as they got a very personal bone to pick with the rest of the orcish army. A lot more are refusing to be exchanged and choosing to wait it out as a POW, rather than be exchanged and be sent into another mean wave and become fertilizer. I am not sure what you are talking about when you say "didn't have enough bodies to exchange the other day?". If you are referring to that comedy Medinksiy performed, well... It was just that - comedy and a bad one at that. No exchange of bodies were arranged and you cant do these things overnight even if you really, really want to. As far as I know, we never bother collecting dead orcs, as there just too many of them and since every single official offer to exchange the fallen was declined, no one ever saw a point in it. In early stages of the invasion, some localized exchanges did happen, but since late 2023, they stopped doing even that. At least as far as I know. And again, no. This is not a civil war. This war is not remotely resembling a civil war now and never really did in the past. This war was initiated by orcs in Crimea by their regular troops, then they tried to start things all over the east and failed in every place except Donetsk and Luhansk. Their agitators were quite literally all over and quite a few of them were arrested or shot'n'killed in action in 2014. But even that didnt get them very far and the unrest was simmering down until they sent over Girkin with a group of terrorists who started to publicly kill people resisting their takeover of Slovyansk and its burbs. Ukraine was still in heavy turmoil after orc's invasion of Crimea and since no one really wanted a war with orcs, our parliament and its speaker (our then prez fled to russia already) government tried to do what they can to de-escalate the situation and talk to Huilo. Orcs werent interested in talks though, they were interested in taking over so they kept sending armed terrorists and only after we saw a large influx of mechanized armed orcs cross the border in the area of Khrustalnyi town, an anti-terrorist operation was announced. Thus, the war began. At first it was mostly orcish covert operations, sporadically flaring up into localized battles, but as Huilo finally realized that he and his orcs can not, under no circumstances regain control over Ukraine politically, he stared his full scale invasion in 2022. Despite my best efforts, you are still not understanding whats at stake here. So i'll try once again (probably in vain, but I'll try) and call it a day. Bert Preast, as far as I know and as far as our family memory goes back. every single generation either fought against the orcs or were forced into military service by them to fight their wars for them against some people who did us nothing wrong. We had enough of this and we will not give in to their demands, not this time, not ever. Not again. The idea of them getting "really annoyed" would be downright funny, if it wouldnt be so damn sad. Thus far, they lost over 1 million in casualties (dead and wounded to the point of not being fit for service), most of their tanks, about half of their military air force (not the total number of everything have, counting only planes that were actually in "ready to fly" condition), thier oil industry is being under constant attack causing them stupendous economic losses and their Crimean fleet is either sunk or hiding in Novorossiysk and not participating in any action out of fear of being sunk. Friend, they are not just "really annoyed", they are badly hurt, bleeding and howl for our blood, destruction of out cities, death of resisting males and "re-education" of our children. They deny us our very existence and consider us defective russians that must be either fixed or exterminated. Given all that, ask yourself how much of a f*ck do we give about WW3, WW4 or WW1025. To us, its do or die already. Ask yourself at what point we'd stop after they blew up our Kakhovka Dam and killed in cold blood with floodwaters tens of thousands in their homes. Better question would be is ask yourself what we will NOT do if we are pushed against a wall and become really, truly desperate. Again - we will either resist and most of us will live, or give in and be exterminated as a nation and ethnic group. So in the end it boils down to this: help us if you can, fight us if you dare, or get out of the way. We will not surrender.
