Creator of DF compliments Sami & Co. and UrW This interview happened 5 year ago, but is new to me because I'm just learning Dwarf Fortress.

Tarn Adams seems like a pretty cool guy and has a life goal similar to Sami's, so it was neat to hear him acknowledge UnReal World and Sami & his helpers in this interview... listen to the first 2 1/2 minutes at least:

Re: Help plz! Stuck and going to die lol I'm pretty sure you can't get out of the situation by deleting files, etc.

The only way I know to "cheat death" is to make a backup copy of the character's folder.
Then you can go back and start from that saved point.

Just roll with the situation, and like you already said, you've learned something and will know better next time.
Permadeath is, of course, one of the hallmarks of roguelike games!

Re: Wits for wandering NPCs and companions - the future version focus This looks great, Sami!  I certainly like to see the emphasis on quality over quantity for the new features too.

Has your shoulder healed to the point of using your arm normally now?

Re: Magic Berrys!
How does one update without losing the characters , is there any posts about that?
Copy character's name folder from the old directory to the new version's directory. Simple as that!

If you use mods, you'll also have to copy them over too.

Re: Improved trading system For me, the game is all about role-playing, and my imagination tells me that Iron age villages would not be "convenient" trading centers for any stranger (the PC) who happens to wander by.  So from this aspect I believe the game hits trading just right.

I see learning the values of items (approximately) as part of the "growing up" of the character, who is, after all, a teenager who just left home. Perhaps the teenager should not have much knowledge of exact values of barter items (in my mind anyway).

I do agree that the mechanic of the actual trade could be improved, especially the "start over" part of trading.

Having the game tell the player anything like the value in squirrel hides of a list of items would be just flat wrong, IMHO.  Learning this for ourselves is part of the charm of the game and part of what separates it from the rest of the "pack".

Like you, I did keep a spreadsheet for a while so I could remember values of typical items. But it did become tedious and so I decided to simply quit doing it. Doing that was a liberating experience for me and afterwards I found the game's enjoyment increased.

Re: Wishlist The vast majority of crossbows from the middle ages have the bolt just laying on the stock when loaded.
Tilting the crossbow sideways while it's loaded could result in the bolt falling off.
Storing such a loaded crossbow on your back is unreasonable, the bolt would fall off.
Even carrying it with one hand in a relaxed manner with it pointed down would do the same.

Iron Age crossbows? Probably less sophisticated than the medieval ones you can find pictures of.

Crossbows should always require two hands when they are loaded.
