Gameplay questions / Re: Injured Adventurer

It will not appear on the map until you find it. Normally it is near the centre of the circle and you need to narrow the options by reading the description, east of this sort of land north of some other sort or whatever it said. Then look for a few bloodscape tiles, then you know you are on the right area.
If you need to search in thick forest give up before you waste a day pointlessly searching.

So it tells me this:
"It was in the south-east from here, just a couple of miles away. I remember building my shelter at border location of coniferous forest area right next to heathland in the south."

Map: https://imgur.com/a/kyAvLqL

It's just to the southeast of my character the area to search in the first image, south centre in the second. I see only forest and mire, nothing described as heathland. I can't find a wolf in the area, which is what he said he fought, only a bear which seems to have nothing to find in the area. Haven't found any tracks, or blood, my tracking is like 90% so I should see it in theory. I've been searching for days!

They directed me to a shelter, and I'm in the area indicated on the map, does the shelter show the shelter icon when it's in the visible range? Or do I have to stumble around blind looking for it in a massive area? :-\

Gameplay questions / Re: Can't trap cellars anymore?

Seeds, leaves and roots can be stored in pantry. Either attached room, separate barn, or simply piled in the corner of one’s cabin.

Meats and fishes can still experience ravens nibbling on them. (Not sure the the big is still around that raven eats not just one piece , but equal bite from an entire stack)

That's incredibly frustrating, thanks.

Harvest down was left in place so existing method wasn’t removed.
And sometimes it’s beneficial to harvest, then thresh on the spot. (Wild harvest such as meadsweet can get heavy as whole plants.)

Ah that makes sense. Hmm as spring approaches I'm going to have to reread how to deal with each plant lol.

Originally the game left harvested crops on the ground.  It was changed recently to give the option to put them directly into the inventory, as farmers were complaining of massive RSI!

EDIT:  If you want an easy introduction to the game, you may want to look at my "Guide for the aspiring hunter" in the Guides & Tutorials forum here:

https://www.unrealworld.fi/forums/index.php?topic=6814.0

It's a bit powergamey I know, but it will teach most of the game and give you confidence to try a harder start the next time!

Thanks I'll take a look, there's a lot of changes since I last played, and much that once was known has been forgotten.

Look for fords to cross rivers, if it's cold then prepare to build a fire to warm you when you reach the other bank.  Take along 3 branches or twigs.  Don't take more if, as with some fords, you have to swim - the extra weight can drown you!

Some lakes are massive, others you can easily go around.

Days to go around this one. Where can I find and how can I recognize fords? I don't have the ability to swim across the rivers for sure, will die trying.

Don't settle too close to a village, or they may consider your stuff as belonging to them - after all, it's on their lands!

I think having at lest three overland tiles between you and the village is considered safe, but I usually settle a lot further away than that.

If you need a paddle and the village has an axe in it somewhere, you can drag a tree to the axe then make boards and a paddle without picking up the axe.  This should not anger the villagers.

They don't have an axe, and I'm barely inside the culture bubble, the nearest village is across a lake and several rivers.

Harvest down leaves the crop on the ground, harvest and pick puts the crop into your inventory.  So using harvest and pick is quicker!

Seems odd to have an option to leave it on the ground, but maybe if you're really overladen or something.

Light lever traps can catch birds without bait when placed in lines (and you're lucky).

There are a few advantages to catching birds:
- You stave off starvation: I suspect it can actually keep you in the semi starved state indefinitely if you get enough and spend all your time processing the birds (if you were lucky enough to catch that many).
- Bird skin provides Hide working training (and also some small amounts of leather).
- It's a passive hunting that provides some base supplement which is important when you haven't got any means of preserving the meat off of large kills.

I generally start by setting up a bunch of lever traps and then try to find a large animal to kill (and bears satisfy the large part, but probably not the "to kill" one). With a little bit of luck I'm able to dry some meat off the side of the shelter before it gets too warm. After than excess meat can be roasted and sold to villagers living within a reasonable distance, or left to spoil and be used as dog food for when you get a dog. Note that roasted meat can be traded for preserved food

I need to find better villages to trade with and move there, because the only two near me suck, and aren't honestly that close, especially when I can't yet make a paddle.

Fishing:

I've been keeping a spread sheet, and I've had luck using berries, leaves, roots, and mushrooms, in addition to the more obvious baits of meat and fish.

meat and fish make the best baits, then leaves and roots are about half as good as those, berries are a big worse than leaves and roots but still all right, and mushrooms are a lot better than nothing, but not as good as berries.

Even with nothing you will sometimes get a roach or a perch and then you should use that as a bait for another fishing round

Trapping: I like to put all kinds of traps in the same general area, with a fence, and bait them with berries, roots, and eventually meat too (spoiled raw meat works fine, cooked or dried or smoked meat doesnt work so well). Each day I reset the traps to train up my skill and eventually it pays off.

Active hunting: this gets less annoying once you have a dog to tire the prey out, before that you want to be good with a bow and arrows or very patient or stick to pine mires.

If it's the time of the year when the ice is thin, wander around along the edge of lakes looking for animals that got overconfident and fell through the ice

why pine mires??

Gameplay questions / Re: does shutter cause a heat loss?
« on: April 26, 2023, 03:24:32 PM »
I don't know about kotas, but shutters in wooden buildings don't seem to cause any loss of heat.

What they do do, however, is wake you up more often by hearing some rustle or thinking you caught some movement.  Shutters allow you to see and shoot out, but too many may not be a good idea.  I once had my cabin attacked by robbers, and they filled me with arrows on three sides while I was only shooting back out of one.

Can't you close shutters?
