It happened a few weeks back in-game, but if a save game will help then I will send one.  Sami?

212
Nah, he says he wants to trade and gives me a list of the furs he wants...  But then he tells me he can't carry them.

The carry limit based acceptance was indeed introduced due to reason explained by Matti-Patti. The exploit possibility was simply too much for lots of players to resists.

But it's indeed been a bit awkward since then and now we've adjusted things so that if the single trader can't carry the traded items they will be distributed among his fellows. The overall limit among the whole group can be still reached with a lot of trading, and then you have to live with that, or trade more high value furs

Fixed/Adjusted - persists in current version 3.63.

Did this fix work?  I am Windows 10/Steam and running 3.70 Beta-3.  Trying to trade for a mail habergeon with foreign traders and even when I make sure there are other traders close to the one I am trying to cut a deal with, he says I am "just a few things away" but he can't carry any more.

Suggestions / Make foreign traders easier to locate
« on: September 13, 2021, 06:44:32 PM »
Three times recently I have encountered foreign traders while on a hunt, each time speaking with them and presumably telling them to wait a few hours and I would be back with the world's supply of quality furs.

Each time I have got home, loaded up on furs and headed back to where I met them.  Each time it seems this group of six or seven Swedes crashing about in the undergrowth is far more elusive than any elk.

Foreign traders are combing the cuds looking for hunters like me.  They have no reason to hide from anyone, and in fact would want to make their presence known to everyone possible.  Maybe a chat option to tell them you'll be back, that makes them remain in place for a day?  Or now that NPCs can light fires, make fires visible from a long distance away and have the traders make camp and keep a fire burning?

Even better, I would prefer to see foreign traders set up in villages for a week or so at a time.  It makes no sense to have them wandering about randomly, they would go to a settlement and wait for the local hunters and trappers to come to them.

Gameplay questions / Re: Use of a dead vagabond as bait
« on: September 13, 2021, 06:24:32 PM »
Update:  A couple of months on and the unfortunate vagabond is now just a pile of bones.  His trap pit didn't catch anything; but then in a trap line of 15 pits - all the others baited with more conventional fare - all I got was one careless elk, so I declare the results "inconclusive".  Still, that's science for you!

Gameplay questions / Use of a dead vagabond as bait
« on: September 05, 2021, 09:19:22 PM »
I have in my possession the recently and most tragically deceased body of a young vagabond adventurer.  I found I can neither butcher nor skin him, so I lobbed his corpse onto one of my trap pits to serve as bait.

I have already got over the moral implications of this; reasoning that it is simply an iron-age method of donating one's body to science, which I feel sure this young man would have wanted.  It's a strictly technical question - are his rotting remains likely to help catch me a bear?

Actually you can slate my morals if you see fit, but I just got the "unity with the forest" message so I am sleeping soundly no matter what you may think  ;D

I have had two tries at this, both with really fast Kaumos and both successful.  The first Kaumo just legged it and picked up a couple of arrows on his way, but he made it to the treeline.  The second got even luckier; he heard swearing and fighting behind him as he scarpered so he lurked in the woods for an hour or so then snurgled back.

I think it was eight Njerps, all dead or dying.  He finished off the survivors then looted everything.  I think the internet calls that "winning".

He didn't survive to enjoy his new found wealth for very long, as he was using Palu's method of lugging around unknown plants to train up herblore.  One day he was feeling peckish, and confused an unknown mushroom for a nice roast fish, and that was that  ;D

Being able to select the month you start in rather than just the season would be great too!

Suggestions / Re: Traps should be nerfed
« on: November 12, 2020, 01:41:29 PM »
I think what needs adjusting is the effect of the trapping skill.  Trapping should be a lifestyle choice, and with low skills your traps should have next to no chance of catching anything, or if something is caught then it should usually escape.  Invest heavily in trapping skill on the other hand, and you should expect to survive well enough on your traps alone.

Modding / Re: IF you could see any mod created, what would it be?
« on: November 06, 2020, 04:24:54 PM »
I think URW would lend itself very well to a prehistoric mod.  I often play it like this anyway, restricting myself to clubs and stone axes and ignoring agriculture and metalwork etc..  What would be great would be hunting megafauna; mammoths, cave lions, auroch, giant elk etc..

As I understand it, it's not possible to mod in new creatures which is a shame.  Maybe Sami could provide some creature templates which modders could use, that way I could get my megafauna and also the posters above could have their orcs and demons and so on.

This is great, I can't wait to see the pictures of you when you put the mask on  :P

I amassed a pack of 14 dogs with one character - he was a sailor shipwrecked on the islands, and the islanders robbed him and left him for dead.  He vowed revenge and after a year he returned in full kit with the dogs, and the havoc he wreaked on the islander villages was something to see.  I can highly recommend it  ;D

EDIT: I lost a few dogs clearing the villages when they got injured and ran away.  I have also lost dogs hunting, but mostly they seem to find their way home eventually.

Gameplay questions / Re: Various questions from a new player
« on: February 22, 2020, 07:59:21 PM »
I just had the same sort of thing happen, an apparently lone wolf came to my cabin and attacked my two dogs.  I poked my head out the door to see what all the noise was about, then grabbed a javelin and chucked it at wolfie.  I got him and he ran out onto the ice about 8 tiles before falling through and expiring.  I got a fire going, stripped off, went prone and crawled out to him, and as expected i fell through a few times.  I even ended up with a harsh skin too!  I think because my dogs got a couple of bites in before I appeared.

However!  I didn't strip off everything - I kept a javelin and handaxe on me as I understand they help you climb back onto the ice after falling through.  I remember reading that somewhere, but I can't remember where.

I had a badger down and bleeding out, and while I waited for him to depart I broke the ice in the nearby marsh to get a drink.  The badger died just as I finished breaking the ice, and disappeared leaving only a bloodscape and the javelin I had stuck him with!  I have a save game if needed, message log below:
