General Discussion / Re: Hunting gripe

Yeah, high stealth usually only allows you to get a couple steps closer to your prey. And while this makes a bit of difference as far as reducing range penalties or lining up a clear shot, the difference is subtle enough to be hardly noticeable if you're not pretty familiar with the game already.

There was a general discussion forum post that I myself made some two days ago that involved a massacre and waddling...

Bug reports / [3.70b3]Stuck Beavers (Pathfinding?)
« on: August 23, 2021, 02:20:47 AM »
Have had three instances now of beavers seemingly unable to move while a couple steps away from safety and water now.  Beavers were not wounded or visibly fatigued to the point of immobility.  I THINK what's going on is that the beaver pathfinding script is trying to make them move down a double-slope but not accepting alternatives.

Meat roasted and traded away. Beaver skins are about as labor-intensive to tan as fox skins, so no issues handling them.  I'm mostly surprised that 1) so many beavers were found together, and 2) that they wandered so far away from the water. I had never witnessed either previously.

General Discussion / Beavers. And guilt.
« on: August 21, 2021, 01:42:11 PM »
I just killed a family of six beavers.  They came inland far enough that I could run and cut them off, clubbing them to death while they waddled slowly toward the water.  Two of those six ran afoul of slopes and bad pathfinding.  I seem to recall beavers being almost impossible to hunt effectively?  Is this something new?

Of course, now I feel a bit sad and guilty (IRL) for the greed-based massacre  :'(

Just started playing this game again with a semi-serious character for the first time in maybe 5 years or so?  I was able to bring down an elk, a reindeer, and two bears within maybe an hour's worth of RL time?  With a slowish char wielding javelins at 42% skill and not cheesing prey against waterways (albeit maybe 60% tracking skill).  The hunting system doesn't seem the slightest bit more difficult to me.  Tracking has for many years been highly terrain and snow-dependent.  Some characters cannot do active hunting very well...particularly in the wrong season.  That's what trapping is for.

While I have not as of yet tried fishing without an iron hook, the success rates presently seem better and more consistent than they were previously.  Particularly when using meat bait for predatory fish like pike.

Suggestions / Re: Reinstate leather cord for arrow-making (3.70 beta 3)

Just wanted to chime in agreement with the OP.  While I'm not an historian, from what I've read sinew seems to have been a more common and widespread material for making arrows.  I realize the textilecraft system is new, but from a gameplay perspective, I find it pretty inconvenient (particularly if starting in the wrong time of year and/or away from villages) to make yarn for arrows; would be nice if sinew was available for use in arrowmaking.  Or perhaps allow a meat cut (or part thereof) as a yarn alternative, to represent sinew harvesting.

Another decent option is to track down some Kaumolais robbers.

General Discussion / Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?

Have an islander going with a cabin built on a good-sized island.  Journeyed to Driik territory early on to trade my rough woodsman's axe and some meat for a far more serviceable masterwork handaxe and a fishing rod.  My hideworking skill is JUST getting high enough to be able to tan saleable (harsh) furs.

Anyhow, have had a couple Njerpez sightings on my islands, that I've mostly ignored.  My character isn't that much of a fighter - mediocre or at least unreliable combat skills, except for a 60% bow, no armor other than furs, 50% dodge, and mainly a shortbow / fine club for armament.  One of the Njerpez kept wandering annoyingly close to the trap line I've been trying to build around a small local lake.  So - perhaps unwisely - I decided to end him.   Enemy armored with several pieces of lamellar and holding a sizeable woodsman's axe.  I should probably have enlisted help but was too lazy.  Instead I tried sneaking around the woods trying to pepper him with arrows.  His armor kept him up for quite a few shots, but was able to back out of sight repeatedly and sneak around to maintain distance.  Good to have that guy gone.

Suggestions / Re: Rare random dead bodies
« on: August 28, 2018, 01:55:02 PM »
I think it actually already IS possible.  Just - as you say, rare.  For example, I once found a bunch of robber and foreign trader corpses sitting in close proximity to a couple live foreign traders.  I find bodies of dead reindeer who feel through thin ice and froze to death fairly commonly.  Hunters/Adventurers do wander randomly, so there's always a chance they'll run afoul of something.  I don't know that they actually chase or hunt anything aggressive that might reasonably kill them (like wolves or bears) though.

Suggestions / Re: New look of rain a bit hard on the eyes

I kind of LIKE the eye strain effect?  I think heavy rain and snow should impair visibility somewhat and the graphics actually do that.

A small bow also is very inaccurate, go get a longbow as soon as you can.
If by "small bow" you mean "shortbow", they are actually one of the most accurate (true) bows.  Just behind the longbow.

Gameplay questions / Re: Your raft is overloaded at only 500 lbs
« on: August 04, 2018, 11:52:59 PM »
Is the limit the same for everything besides PC, or might the punt have an higher limit?

If I recall correctly, a punt can carry more.
Raft carries more.  Punt is lighter.

Guides and tutorials / Re: Skill Training Guide

Timbercraft is used for staves.  The skill fortunately trains fairly easily over the long run, but a skill % that is too low can make early game hunting with javelins fairly unpleasant since you need decent quality staves (or good quality tools) for decent javelins.  Rough and especially crude javelins are MUCH harder to hit and/or kill things with than decent ones.

Gameplay questions / Re: Wolves! Help!
« on: July 29, 2018, 09:14:40 PM »
Wolves are amongst the most dangerous enemies in the game.  They can easily instakill you if they get you from behind.  Best way IMO to hunt them is to use ranged weapons from a raft or punt away from the shore if they're near water.  Or set traps along the periphery of their territory if they're not.  Always presume there are several around...so even once you catch one in a trap you'll want to scout around a bit (very carefully); then kill the trapped wolf with thrown rocks or other weapons; then drag the carcass somewhere safe to skin and butcher.  Fortunately wolf corpses aren't too heavy.  Wolves respond quite well to meat bait.
