Here's the good old poll reposted here at the new forums.
Let us know how you ended up into the UnReal World.
Also, feel free to reply here to tell your story.
(You may also consider to find and copy&paste your reply from the old forums poll thread.)

I'm not entirely sure but I think I found this game thru Mikrobitti -magazine. Must have been somewhere between 2000-2004.
I still have the original money transfer receipt from bank when I registered the game back then, that would probably have the date.

I first heard of URW on the Roguelike Radio episode about it.

Gotta be honest, I can't even remember how I originally found the game. I think my first exposure might've been through Mikrobitti too - maybe the game was featured as a "game of the day" or something. Whatever it was, I downloaded the game without a second thought, being a big fan of roguelikes. Fell in love with the game, but the limited lifetime in the shareware version just wasn't doing it for me, so after a while I sent my registration letter through snail mail, I believe along with cash money (technically forbidden, but this was before convenient online payments, so meh, sue me), and soon enough I was the proud owner of a registered copy of URW. Felt pretty good to have my name displayed in the main menu and everything.

Fast forward a decade and a half, and just yesterday I rolled a new character. The main menu doesn't display my name anymore, but the magic's definitely still there.

I vaguely remember someone mentioning it. This was pre-steam. At the time I was between work so a free to try game with a recommendation was an 'okay lets try'. Turned out I liked it. Paid into becoming a lifetime member. Did a simple mod. Annoyed Saami for a while every time I did a minor update to the mod. We eventually just realized its better to link to the mod thread in the forum so he wouldn't have to do coding every... few days... or few hours.  ;)

I think I may have seen UrW in RogueBasin first (like five years ago), when I was actively searching for roguelikes in the survival genre.

I think it was on a shareware cd I bought 20+ years ago, before I had internet. I didn't start playing it properly until about 5 years ago when I found it was still being developed.

I found the game by doing a google search for a game that was similar to one I was playing. I hated the way the developer of the other game was implementing things and when people asked him what he was doing, he said "It's my game and I will do whatever the hell I want. I don't care what people want." So that statement prompted me to do searches to find a game similar to it. I found UnW and I have not been disappointed.

Had to go and search email archives when I bought UrW. Seems to have been in summer of 2007. So it is 10 year anniversary of full game for me. That doesn't however tell when I found UrW first time, I played it quite long time (years) with demo before Windows version came, and I decided it is time to make next big step in this relationship. It is nice to get messages now and then about changes in forums and new version, it always brings me back to this game.

It's been 15 years already  :o

I remember searching the internet for an indepth survival game, this was probably around 2011-13 when the survival genre got a massive reboot. Most of the games I was finding were pretty under developed and I didn't really like them. I then found this game on a reddit post, someone was looking for a wilderness survival game and this game was recommended.

It was 2010 when I first heard of it via watching it on a youtubers channel. I found it interesting, but not enough to play it myself. A few years later I have decided to try it myself, and I have found myself playing on and off again. Honestly, I mostly use it as inspiration of a fantasy setting than anything else.

Still the game is fun and I really want to get around to modding, adding possible endgame content.

The most likely place where I found out about URW would've been on the Haven & Hearth forums. My village group disbanded after a world reset so I was looking around for a roguelike I could get comfortable with. I've been playing since version 3.17

Hello.

It must've been at least ten or so plus years now. Found Unreal World by searching for a game called Notrium, I think the spelling is correct?, back before they had zones in that game. So it must have been around 2003 or 2004. Can't remember further back. It was before the red boxes got removed from the zoomed in view and some sounds weren't there, when dead animals just flipped over. Been playing ever since then and it is still the first game I install after a clean format. I have also recommended it to many friends and they also still actively play. (My memory might be lying to me though)

PS: Sitting around a fire roasting marshmellows and telling each other all the stories and adventures that you've been on is a great way to spend time outside of the game.

Well, let's see. Wow.

It's been on my Steam wishlist for half of forever. I discovered it on Steam at some point, wishlisted it and then downloaded the free version of the game a long time ago (I know this because I found it sitting on my hard drive yesterday). For some reason I never got around to playing it. So the game went on sale on Steam but I'm  holding off because I'm in between paydays, so I re-downloaded and reinstalled the free version and just started playing it yesterday.

I have mixed feelings.

Of course as a newbie I had to take it slow and learn things, so I wound up spending most of yesterday working my way through the "Easy Power Start" guide on Steam. I was about 3/4 of the way through that (had most of the decent tools I needed to start working efficiently) when I returned to one of my shelters only to be robbed and left for dead by a bunch of bandits.

So, back to no weapons and barely any tools (they even took the pig I started the game with!) and with the added fun of having to drop most of my stuff just so I could limp around and try to recoup. I was definitely feeling the pain of having about half a days' worth of gaming sucked down the drain. I know, I know, most of you power players and master survivalists probably have a fully furnished base somewhere with about three sets of tools you can grab 'just in case', but I wasn't there yet.

I almost abandoned my effort and just started a new game on the spot. Almost. For some reason, I kept playing. It was probably morbid curiosity, some vague desire to see exactly how grim would be the end of my first character. I didn't see how she could possibly keep going after that catastrophe. But she did.

She went on to recover from all of her wounds, discovering several more Driikalis villages in the process. She survived to complete the basic course and is about to finish her survey of the Driikalis territory now. She doesn't have all of her best tools back yet, but I managed to locate a village that sells most of them and other than that I'd say she is well recovered from the bandit takeover of her shelter. She even has a dog now. 8)

I wouldn't necessarily say that I discovered UnReal World. It almost seems rather that UnReal World discovered me.

Same for me, was coming off a DF binge and wanted something with a similar feel, but more relaxing gameplay.
If I remember correctly google lead me to some UnReal World articles, probably the Escapist or Rock Paper Shotgun ones mentioned earlier.

Sidenote: the atmosphere heavily contributed to me taking up hiking as a hobby, turns out Hungary has some beautiful sites :)

Bought it on steam when new, rage quit 32 mins in never refunded decided I wanted to try again last weekend watched lets play videos learned basics, love it, now recruiting others to play. We play together on discord sharing stories and me helping them out since I got 30 more hours in game then them and watched like 8 hours of videos on it lol But even then I am learning from them like one friend died one time only at the start to a bear on the hunter accident start, now he is still on char 2 got most hist first cabin done, and I went through like 3 guys who died, and gave up and went back to my old guy before i played with them that just did his first 2x2 and finished his first trap fence on choke point.

But teaching me now lol, like the levor traps I thought were useless we all complained about the birds flying by getting that "you spot something you wish to abort your task?" he would always stop and chuck a javelin at them. And now he is getting gamey putting up lever traps for them. I can't lie I did that where I was making a 3 world tile long trap fence, now realize a better spot was below me about 5 tiles with a one tile choke point. Anyways I set up like one every 20 tiles or so on local map because its summer time and I see them all over while I am digging my holes for trap pits and making trap fences, not only did I kill 2 of them, I caught a rabbit with one, I never even saw a rabbit in this game till now lol. Best part no bait needed, I didn't see that till I hit f1 to confirm it. So now that is my stable I got them near by cabin so I can come back from work on the trap fence, and cross fingers the birds that keep leaving feathers all over my island get caught.

I was actively looking for a turn-based survival game.  One preferably without such silliness as zombies, or a post-apocalyptic theme.
This game is just about as close as I've been able to find.  I was looking for something that was as realistic as possible for someone in a wilderness survival situation, and the real-life resources and survival techniques.
I've very much enjoyed this game.  If anyone knows of any other similar games, I would love to see them, or hope that the next release of this game comes out and is even more realistic as possible.

Thats exactly what i wanted to tell you about, because its obvious how huge amount of work is behind this game and even most potencial fans have no chance to find it without accident..

I was trying to mod The Long Dark to finaly get what i wanted from it (less wildlife and less loot mostly), then i got pissed of and typed "hardcore survival game" to google.
I knew there has to be a lot of people which want such a game in the world..

And i found this via some forums about survival games. This is really strange, i would play it for years now, but didn't know it even exists..
I played a lot of survivals and always was bored by how developers are trying to have the game more accesible (The Long Dark, 7 days to die). I didn't even try to buy games like Rust, or Ark, because i was part of 7d community and i knew they started to turn the game to be easier because of sale success of these both games. Major people unfortunatelly want buying easy games..

I played even games which were influented by this obviously (NEO scavenger).

First things first: I just signed up on the forum, so I think that I should probably start by saying hello, it's nice to meet you all :)

I discovered the game through Reddit during the past Christmas holidays, I was sick at home with a very bad cold and looking for an immersive and in-depth survival game to sunk hours and hours into, and saw lots of users recommending this UnReal World game, so I said to myself "This game must be really cool, I should probably try it", and I'm so glad that I did because I love it, I've been playing it everyday since then, and you should know that I'm that kind of gamer who endlessly jumps from one game to another, so the fact that I've been sticking with it since then it's quite of an accomplishment for the game :D

P.S: English is not my native language (I am italian), so I apologize for all the mistakes that could be present in my posts, due to lack of practice my written english is becoming a bit rusty, but I hope you can bear with me :)

About 10 years Ago I needed a game that I could play offline as my parents turned off the internet after a certain time.

I remember having absolutely no idea what I was doing my first few nights as the instructions weren't great and I didn't understand what I was looking at. I had no internet to look up guides or anything so I would wander around until I died.

I picked up the game again after a year. I had forgotten the name and frantically researched online looking for Unreal World.

To this day I have played off and on. Over 50 different characters meeting different fates.

I need to change my vote. I thought I had found URW by accident, but I remember that I was looking for a game exactly like this. Extreme PvE, hermit lifestyle, extreme survival scenarios, and self-sufficiency.

I was trying to get away from other crafting/survival games that had too much PvP and MMO RP elements.

I think I first downloaded this two, maybe three, years ago. I really love the lone-wolf style, PvE environment of URW.

Uhm... Now, the first time I saw Unreal World? That's a hard question... I think the very first time I got exposed to the game was around 2009. I was searching the web for some roguelike game from my childhood, which I never found, sadly, instead of my childhood game I found UrW.... Been around messing with it since then. With breaks every now and then and coming back not long after.
You can say am the one who were lurking into the shadows for long a time, but never approached until now.
Well, that's it before I go away and resume lurking into the shadows once more. ; :)

I've been into this game on and off for about 6 years now. I remember hearing about roguelike games on some article or other, and thought i'd like to give one a try. I think I sort of stumbled onto this one after googling roguelike. It took me about a week to properly learn the interface, and even longer before I wasn't just randomly dying after a few days of starving. Amazing how Sami and friends have packed so much depth into something so graphically simple. The only other game i've i've kept returning to like this one is Civilization 3. I feel like the two games are comparable in terms of pure depth of gameplay.

Since I switch to Linux game options become limited. I searched for something like Angband or Nethack but with graphic.

I always prefer gameplay to graphics.
Low graphics actually can be predictor of good game. Like board games and chess there are no graphic at all.
If people play game without visual effects there must be a reason.
When I saw unedited photos with pixel graphics I realize this must be something interesting.

Played it briefly in the mid-nineties or thereabouts, then put it down because it was too hard. Fast forward 20 years and I see it mentioned in a thread on RPS and thought "that game still exists?" and decided to try it out again - especially as I've been listening to Heilung lately, and been into retro bushcrafting and survival/prepping, so it was kind of logical.

I was poking around the internet archive (archive.org) dos game section for something to play stumbled across a version 2.40 UrW. I tryied and liked it so I googled it and came into the modern world of 3.40. I side note I almost cried when they disabled the USB ports and I could no longer play my thumb drive copy at work

Hello all. I'm new to this forum, though I've been playing URW on and off for quite a while.

I first discovered UnReal World over three years ago, on an external site intended for its promotion - the URW profile at IndieDB.com (https://www.indiedb.com/games/the-unreal-world). Then I came over to the official site, downloaded the then-new version 3.19 and started learning the ropes. The shortcut commands were a bit intimidating at first, but I soon made sense of them and the rest went quite smoothly.

I played Unreal World most heavily in 2015 and 2016, but I intend to return to playing it and finally try out some mods, at least for the latest version of the game (3.52). I still have version 3.19 on my computer and I intend to keep it installed (just for nostalgia's sake and to continue a bit of my existing playthrough), but I'll also do a separate install of the latest version and keep updating that one. :) Though I like the newer graphics a lot, there was something cute about the 3.19 (and previous) graphics that keeps me coming back to that older version.

I like all the new modding that's sprung up around the latest releases. I was impressed by the depth of the sim when I first played in 2015, but I love the fact URW's players still want to add more depth and detail. My kind of people. :)

I was querying the Arch Linux package manager for urw-fonts to install (https://ctan.org/pkg/urw) when one of the search results descibed itself as "UnReal World is a unique low-fantasy roguelike game set in the far north during the late Iron-Age". I installed the game instead of the fonts, without really knowing what to expect, and immediately did a straight 8-hour run in my first ever gameplay... :-D

This was 3.32 in August 2016.

Originally started playing somewhere in 02-03 when the game was version 2.7, hard to say where I originally bumped into it, but I was drawn by the fact that it was a domestic game with beautiful graphics. Still going strong with my longest living character Raimo Reemiläinen, and I still can't get enough of the game. I found my lifetime-registration package/code in my old email account, which states that I bought the licence on 7.8.2003. Seems to be a recurring date in my life, since I got married on 7.8.2018, and now I'm bugging my wife to have a go at the game :)

I found it on a DVD that came with a german pc magazine in 2014 or 2015. In the beginning I had a hard time to cope with the keyboard driven gameplay, but I could not let it go, for there was - and still is - so much to discover in natures course, and life is so true.

Found UrW on a BBS site, it sounds likes something nostalgic in early 90s. But no, it was in 2013.
UrW was v3.16 then IIRC. It was free to roast your dead Daddy on start-up lol.

I was enchanted with the opening theme music, and a game of Suomenusko background is totally something fresh to me.
Unreal World, hunting or being hunted. It's so simple and there're nothing much to do comparing to MINECraft of TES.
Yet I plays UrW more. Not a hero/lord in his mansion or castle, but a tribal vagabond just suits me.

BTW it's suprised to see that Ainu, indigenous people of northern Far East (mainly Sakhalin, RUS and Hokkaido, JP), use something similar to Käpälälauta as fox traps.
Amazing coincidence even though there're 7000+ kilometers apart from each other.

Thanks Sami, Erkka and people of Finland.

After reinstalling windows find out I dont have excess to drive which i didnt know was encrypted.
Decided to try a different OS and installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron, so it must be 2008.
With limited choice of games I found one with computer graphics and portraits of people in costumes. It also had keyboard control. It looked very original. I like games with gameplay over graphics. This one looked like more humanized version of Nethack.

Not sure when I bought the game. Or where exactly I heard of it.
I got a remote recollection it was pre-1998 (as that’s when I graduated college and started my my military service)

Possibly from Mikrobitti or Pelit magazine. Or possibly an online website ???

Hallo

back in Ubuntu 10 and 12 times, it was one of the first Indie_games. It was even in the software center, as far as I remember, I tried a lot of games at that time and I got hooked with the magic of this one.

Thanks for supporting deb.

When searching infos in forum, I am quite surprised to found this development news: https://www.unrealworld.fi/forums/index.php?topic=1744.0
Did't realize this interview is years ago as I just saw it recently, and immediately been hooked and play the game since then.
Sadly there's no English translation, but the interview itself is quite in-depth and nicely wrote.

Can't really remember, it was back in 2006, but it was when I first started getting interested in bushcraft, survival, etc so I imagined I googled "best survival game" or something to that effect.

My brother was playing the game maybe about 10 years ago. I remember he was dying alot. I was playing something else at the time, and forgot about UrW. A while a go he told me he had found the the game again and that it was now free to play. I decided to try it, and have been amazed how good the game is.

EDIT : removed suspicious links.

The game was in a recommendation list on r/dwarffortress for someone looking for games like df adventurer mode.
I tried it... and goodbye df...

Just knowing that this game was out there since 1992 and I haven't been aware of it makes me feel sick.

Okay, it is a little over a year I first found this game so I wanted to write my story about it. ;D

I've always liked survival games, mostly played arcadey games like Don't Starve, Minecraft and so on. At the end of 2019 I've become interested in indigenous cultures and survival skills. While I was doing little projects of mine, I wanted a deeper and more realistic survival game too. I remember exactly searching "Hunter gatherer sim" in google. Led me to a reddit post which one user was suggesting Unreal World. It was a indie game subreddit If I remember correctly. To be honest, I was kind of dissapointed at first. I was not expecting a turn based rogue-like game. I watched some videos, saw the devs and how "real" they were about the whole atmosphere of the game. The videos which they have uploaded made me change my opinions about the game and I didn't even try the free version, I just bought it off Steam at full price :D (The price was very pocket friendly for my currency even at full). And later I bought one for my friend at sale. Now I don't even look back as I stray further away from video games, URW became the only game I still play and it is the only game which I actually joined its community. I first joined because I wanted to try some mods, but after seeing the other users were pretty chill overall, I decided to join.

I don't really know why but URW is really a special game for me, the theme the message in the outro everything is just perfect. Thank you Sami and Erkka for this amazing game.

I don't remember exactly when I heard of Unreal World specifically, I think I was looking at other roguelikes after playing a bunch of Dorf Fort and Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead when I came across it. As soon as I read the description, not only was I super excited about the gameplay but I remembered reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. In it, the perspective character in the modern day, Randy I think, talks about either playing or programming a game which is exactly the same as Unreal World, and was clearly a reference to it. I was incredibly excited that it was a real game, installed it and fell in love immediately

@LuchyMane

Gotta love a post that merges URW and Neal Stephenson. Nice taste in both lit and games. Haven't read Criptonomicon yet, though (took on Snow Crash to begin with).

I was browsing a roguelike curator when I found out about this game. I wanted to find a game that introduced me to a different experience, something that would enrich my worldview. And URW doesn't disappoint. Posts like yours, the devs logs, the in-game entries, all of these are living proof of it.

@Melchizedek
Thanks for the compliment haha, I gotta say Neal Stephenson is a great author but his endings always feel a little off-although Cryptonomicon's wasn't bad. Snow Crash is an all time favourite of mine, especially with it's cheesy in retrospect view of the internet's possibilities. It's up there with Red Mars (which is written by Kim Stanley Robinson, my favourite author)

And I'm absolutely in agreement on URW, it's a game like no other which led me down a rabbit hole of researching the lives and worldviews of indigenous cultures. It's definitely improved my life in a small way, even though I haven't played it in ages.

I believe I discovered it when I was reading and browsing various sites about Finnish prehistory on the interwebs, sometime in 2020

I was always interested in survival games. I aspired to play games that were "realistic". After a lot of googling around I found this game. I am a fan of old graphics/retro games and the graphics for this game are perfect!
