Title: Old Versions of Unreal World
Post by: Koivu on January 21, 2021, 07:57:25 PM
Hello friends and foes!

I'm an owner of the Steam version of the game. I play it on a number of computers. During the winter I spend a considerable amount of time at a certain cottage with an old beast of a PC with Windows XP. My problem is that my computer here is missing a .dll file to run the game.

I would like to find a download file for an old version of the game, XP/Vista age version is fine, but I suspect a version that is only a few years old may well do the trick, possibly pre Steam version (26 Feb, 2016), is enough.

I am aware that Steam no longer supports XP, I am not willing to change the operating system on my only proper XP machine. I am also aware of .dll file downloads and tricks, I am not prepared to tinker with this as I do not know exactly what I am doing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Contact Sami or Erkka on email about access to Lifetimer Members board here on the forums.
There's versions back to 2.50 only, for earlier versions, Sami might have archives  :D

You could search for your missing dll(s) on a site like this:
https://www.dll-files.com

Or try some of these previous versions:
https://the-unreal-world.en.uptodown.com/windows/versions
or here:
https://www.indiedb.com/games/the-unreal-world/downloads

Hope this helps.  :)

1) You can copy the 'survivor' folder to another pc and migrate it to a current version.
Knowing the 'actual' version that it comes from will help a lot. Open the news.txt file in the Unrealworld folder to see
   what version it is.
2) Knowing the starting version will set what's required to migrate it to a more stable version and system.

Many thanks for the reply, I'll drop one of them a line.

I don't need anything that old! Seems like Version 3.18 was released 27-Feb-2014.

EDIT: Thanks Frostie, I'll try that first!

Our no-more-maintained IndieDB page (https://www.indiedb.com/games/the-unreal-world) still hosts downloads for versions 3.17 - 3.30 (from years 2013 - 2016)

I love you guys! It worked like a charm, I'm now playing the 3.30 version of the game on my old computer.

Are there any of the old DOS versions out there? I'd love to play a more old school version on my 286/386/486.

Pre-Win aka last 16bit version would be something like 2.20... if there’s a copy of that floating somewhere, you’d also need the registration key.

Thank you for the reply.

Can I purchase that version somewhere? I only have the Steam version at the moment.

Your best option is to email Sami, his email is on the website. Explain your case, he's the one and pretty much only person to be able to assist. (I would guess he has the old versions, as an archive of sorts. Don't know if he actually does)

Old versions' owners were later offered Steam keys. Like when you see "Lifetime supporter" on some of the forum profiles. Hopefully that goes backwards too  :)
