I played this game a couple of years ago, and there was a mod whose purpose I don't remember and didn't use much, but in this mod they provided hand drawn versions of every single character portrait and even the environment and village/home portraits.
I feel the current portraits are very larpy and a little bit jarring when they all look like perfect skinned nerdy Scandinavians at a fair. Would truly appreciate any direction if someone remembers this mod or has a link to the portraits. I will post here if I end up finding it.

I may be wrong but I think you're looking for "[Wickham's] Graphical Enhancement Project"
It provides a good number of images that have a very different feel from the LARPy ones.
Searched but did not find a link to it here. I do have a copy of this mod but it is oversize to attach here.
